Yes, another gybing question... I can hear the groans now...

I was trying to do a strap to strap today, and trying to exit all twisted up. It happened once or twice, but most of the time I ended up with straight legs, sail leaning rearwards, and me falling off the back of the board...

Are there any tips from someone who's been through this stage? Is it to do with the rig flip?

First of all you have to define strap to strap, my idea of it or Gestalt's.
My idea is when the old back foot comes out of it's strap and is placed on the rail between the front and back straps to initiate the gybe. About 1/2 way round it pivots and slides into the new front strap, the old front foot goes straight into the back strap without taking a step forward.

Gestalt's definition is something about when the sail is flipped and it doesn't seem to matter what the feet do.

Anyway why are you trying to exit twisted up??? that just sounds hard!

You should be exiting with both feet in the their correct strap, sheeted in and hooking up. I do sometimes have the sail behind me when I'm on starboard tack, don't know why doesn't happen on port. But it's just a matter of leaning forwards a bit and pulling the sail forward.

I'm not sure about rig flip timing compared to feet change. Think my gybe's vary a lot, certainly sail flip changes depending how powered up I am, the less powered up the later the flip.
Elmo is threatening to video me next time I'm going for alpha's (not sure if he's trying to put me off or what) If it happens I might know a bit more. As soon as I try and think about what I'm doing nothing works!!!

Was a good day at shearwater today Nebs
Missing you now the big smoke has captured you
On the strap to strap
Haircut made me sail switch stance on flat water
Once you can do that the gybe exit is easy
Easier may be more honest

Just keep leaning right through the turn , flip the rig late , resist pointing into the wind to stay on the plane and switch feet.
And also keep you knees bent and downward pressure on the boom through the turn to keep the rail bitting that way you stay stable.
Hope that helps

Now you say that stribo (late rig flip) Think that's when I get into a bit of trouble, when powered up a late rig flip almost forces a step forward, ruining the strap to strap, and takes up extra time getting the rig under control, while I fall off the plane.
So rig flip timing is crucial and as I've recently found out, especially with cammed sails.

God I wish I could gybe... you guys are so cool!

All I ever do is tack, tack, tack. I do more tacks than an accountant! (Geddit? Ha ha ha ha ha ha....!)

I think I lost my mind today, sometime during the 10K BIKE RIDE HOME INTO A 20 KNOT HEADWIND...as one does...if only I knew someone with a CAR, who windsurfs too...

Hmmm.... you might be right -- it might be time to try something different. What's the worst that can happen?

Will give them a burl.

This is why the leaning right through is important on this style of jybe and as with all jybes keep weight on the boom and knees bent to drive the rail through the turn . Give it a go mate i know its frustrating as there is a lot going on chop , gusts etc... But you know what they say "practice makes perfect" and i am by no means perfect BTW . I probably only get 2 out of 5 planning and find it easier over powered because i have lots of board speed and its more of a survival thing

Also can you duck jybe? Once you learn a duck what i'm saying makes sense .

Cheers

P.S. try and stay off the wind once the turn and flip is complete pointing to soon will slow you down and off the plane

The whole idea of learning strap to strap was so that I could then try a duck! One thing at a time, I learn slowly

Another point is look in the direction of your exit , dont stare at the rig
Take your back foot out, stay on your toes and lean lean lean
