This worked for me years ago. Drill a hole through the base and the tip, big enuf to thread some decent size rope through. Don't worry, by the sounds of it you'll be using these holes again and again. Now tie one end to a tree and the other to the towball of a kombi. Works everytime.

Here's a trick - lean the mast against a tree and then jump on it until it comes apart. It sounds a bit dodgey, I know, but I can verify it works... I just can't verify exactly *how* it works!

A prevention method is to make sure there's no sand or dirt on the mast ends before putting them together.

well for a softy method.
I used a plastic hammer (the ones for the camping stuff), bang the junction of the 2 parts and keep wet with water ( using a sponge ), Meanwhile pull once a while with the 2 booms....
It does take quite a while but what I think it does is that the vibrations and water makes the sand grains move slowly.

slow process but it did work, having said that the towball/Combi method seems good to me, and I am sure if you do a good knot like a clovehitch type you don't need to drill any hole. ( this knot is strong even lengthwise)
in case you don't know what I am talking about:

good luck

the "Kombi" method is very specific though - must be a "Kombi"
nothing else will do. If you really go at it hard, the chassis
stays behind and the body keeps going

I think i know why it has to be a kombi.

cause having the engine at the back will stop the mast piece piercing the whole way through the car and killing the occupant once it splits from the other half.

Id try using a snatch strap for even better effect.

?????

Apply suncream to the end bits works. But this doesnt help if its already stuck :p Otherwise just dont get it sandy and it should be fine.

Sand sticks realy well to sunscreen, you might as well glue it together.

No need for further advice the mast snapped as I was applying pressure to the joint, time to go skinny I think

Not that there is any point now but if you put an old mast base in the bottem of youre mast and then smack it as hard as you can. You may have to smack it a few times, it not only relieves stress but i garuntee that it will release the most stubburn of jams.

PS I am pretty sure that this is Windsurfing Perths Secret Method as they showed me this years ago.

too little too late for the Bermand i'm sorry but i've had success in the past with boiling water on the outer and working the join up and down. Also flushing water down the top of the mast can dislodge the fine sand. My mast is still going after this treatment but that's cos i sail like a kook...

Three people are needed. One at each end pulling and twisting in opposited directions. One stands at the join and bangs it (or taps it) with a hammer, spanner, kombi wheel brace etc. Easy!

See, there's that Kombi thing again....

Seems like you can only resolve this one if you have a Kombi

the trick with the Kombi is you need to run the engine for 1/2 an hour, then tip it over on it's side. Then hold the joint of the mast over the flames. Once the ferrule has heated, it should pull apart. The advantage of this method is

1. you have done the driving public a favour

2. you have fixed your mast at the same time

nothing like killing two birds with one stone hey! Aparently there is a similar trick to eliminating "inlaws" and XD Falcons, by putting one inside the other and pushing off a cliff.

Hope this helps

My skinny jams with sand all the time.
I call lots of other sailors, passing strangers, anyone, over. Half the people on one side, half on the other and keep twisting if it doesn't work just get more people to help. 8 is the most people I've had to use.
