How do you pronounce "X-Ply"?

Is it pronounced "Ex-Ply" or "Cross-Ply"?

I've been driving myself crazy over this one for ages. I assume it's the former, but I'd hate to think people were smirking at me behind my back...

I'd rather say cross.
Ex sounds like something I used to stick my thing into but wish I didn't.

I always thought that x-ply was just the abbreviated version of cross-ply and as such I always say cross-ply.
Could be wrong though as I have been known to make the occasional stuff up

I've always called it Ex-ply but I guess one man's ex is another man's cross...

Jarrah would be pretty heavy.. and the splinters are a mongrel
Bamboo would probably be a better option.

Isn't X-ply the stuff where the reinforcing fibers cross over each other in a X pattern???

Dimension Polyant, who make a lot of this cloth, call it X (ex) ply not cross.

I also think it depends on the context. The cloth itself may be called x-ply where the technique/application is called cross ply.

I've never windsurfed before and there's no surf today so I'd like to try it. Is there anywhere on the Gold Coast where I can hire a windsurfer?

It won't be that simple - you have to LEARN first! Go to the QLD forum and ask some of the locals to show you what's what.

The Evolution of the Pronunciation of X-ply.

Apparently, it was originally pronounced ex-ply,
but this name was already being used by another product.

So legally, it couldn't be called ex-ply anymore.

It was now ex- ex-ply.

This was hard to say, and made people cross,

....and hence the term "cross"ply was born (Q.E.D)
