^^^ I don't know that it would feel that different..... but I do believe that full wood over carbon is the most durable construction I've been seeing in the last few years. Good balance of light and strength. I'm excited as we are seeing more Aussie boards coming back now- Severne and Windtech, now Sunova, I reckon that is great

I've heard good reports on sunova sups from friends that use them, it will be interesting to see if they can compete with brands they have a longer history of R&d behind them.

I'm currently using the 88L quad wave board as my main board over in WA.

By no means an expert or test rider but have loved everything about the board. Might be slightly heavier than most other brands for the same size but nothing major.

The one I have is wood all over (no fancy colours anywhere) I'm not sure if this was a once off or it may be an option on purchase...

It's the 'Wave 1' Board in the video below.

Yep the shore break was killer. The gusts were pretty full on. Good effort by you on a 4.7 I'm probably 20kg heavier than you and I was maxed on my 4.2

Any more news about the Sunova windsurf range since May'18? I have the 8'10 Acid model SUP and that board is a keeper. The Sunova SUPs have a mini mast track in them which I thought was a bit odd but I read an interview on Burt Burger and I think he said he learned how to work with epoxy and sandwich construction techniques back in the earlier days of windsurfing in WA so he has an interest in windsurfing. I would love to try the Sunova onshore waveboard to see how that performs.

I'd love to learn more about those, especially the wave boards.
Who is the shaper, does he windsurf ?
Who does the R&D ?

Hey guys, just a little info on what Sunova is doing with Sail boards...

firstly my involvement is purely offering the Sunova brand and construction tech, I don't at all profess to be a sail boarder, but have built plenty over the years, starting out with Greg Laurenson in the 80s through to building EPS Balsa sandwich boards under the Sunova label through the 90s, only for crew who knew exactly what shapes they wanted, once crew who understood the construction, saw our Surfboards, they knew the tech would work well in sailboards, but I never designed any, simply just followed the requests of other experienced sailors..
Fast forward to today, now with my own surfboard factory based in Thailand, my Business partner Martin Jandke is an avid Kite and Sail boarder,, crazy advanced skills, I once seen him do a forward roll off a knee high wave.. he ran Cobra's kiteboard construction division for 8 years..

Then 3 of our best surfboard craftsmen here at the factory, our laminator, finisher and shaper/sander are all competitive windsurfers, each spent between 12 and 14 years working in Cobra building, Starboard, Naish, JP just to name a few, so our staff were building their own Sailboards with Sunova construction, going to contests and coming back with 1st, 2nd and 3rd trophies, this went on for a number of years, regardless of who of them came first, between them they always came back with the top 3 spots..
Martin tries one and is like WOW, such a smooth fast ride, with so much pop,, which is typical of our surfboard performance, so no surprises to me.. Then our production manager also used to work at Cobra and was product set up manager for most of the major windsurf brands and is also a really good sailor..
About 3 years ago a friend of Martins was visiting Thailand, Jonah Lepak from Santa Cruz, an ex Pro on the PWA, built his first Windsurfer in 83 and designed for Gaastra, worked with Quatro, saw Martins sailboard, had a go and freaked how well it went, he asked if we could build him some if he sent us the design files.. This evolved into a small range designed by Jonah..
So it came about from a small group of core sailors who just wanted good stuff for themselves, but every time other sailors saw the boards there was interest, so we decided on a few basic boards to show the construction, but with the demand for sailboards being on the decline for 15 years or more, Brands still running, being highly professional with good equipment, and most sailors these days being advanced core enthusiasts, we figured it was near impossible to develop a range that covered everyone, then even harder, not being a long established brand in Windsurfers, to expect retailers to purchase our boards.. So we decided on a small range where a shop could buy one or two, then we just stick to building customs so crew get exactly what they want.. this is something we are not actively promoting, just organic word of mouth as people are exposed to the boards..
while it's possible to build boards crazy light in this construction, we have opted for an overbuilt rather than under built product so we get no come backs, but with the focus on customs you can get what you want from a professional respected designer through to top end craftsmen doing the build, from a Brand and tech that has stood the test of time..

Thats about it..
Regards
Bert

Shame so many Cobra people are involved
Its OK.... I jest, not a fan of their construction but if you have control its awesome.

More sizes? Avail in Australia soon? Testers? I think they were the main questions many would have Bert.

Top stuff!

I actually got to meet Bert and get a tour of the factory when i was over there last year! Was snooping around peaking through the windows when this big ugly hairy bloke sneaks up behind me and booms ' you right there?' scared **** out of me! :)
Then without even asking , he showed me all around , their processes , QA systems, build processes , tech etc..factory was schmick (always a good sign !) everyone was super chilled and relaxed and seemed to be enjoying themselves.

I'm not a board designer but from what i saw and learnt I was blown away , very much a hands on process with everyone super responsible for their roles and jobs on the line, this was no mass production cookie cutter line, very proud and personal with an eye for the little things that make a big difference. Bert's living the dream in paradise and they have a nice operation going on.
They have some really cool 'split board' things going for race sups etc, very clever, the surf boards look deluxe also.

I've already marked my next SUP down as a Sunova Creek.

Mark_australia, I have never even seen the Cobra factory, but from what I've heard they are super professional, when brands approach them to have boards built, it's up to the brand themselves to provide layup and construction specs, Cobra simply provides a production service to a very high standard, most brands have their own product set up managers who will over see process and QA within the Cobra factory, so if you have seen sub standard product coming from them, then that's the brand itself allowing certain methods or materials in their boards... I've had brands approach my factory with lay up and process requests, I've looked at it and said " Sorry no way, I would not build sub standard **** and have it associated with my factory" . Where as Cobra will build what you want regardless..

R1DER, correct S3d... we have done both custom surf and SUP from files provided by customers, and built them as Sunova's as long as there not complete dogs.. With Windsurfers requiring way more spec info on lay up and insert positions , you would be looking at 15% custom set up charge and another 5% if you wanted graphics.. We don't do OEM anymore, only make our own brand..
