A couple of years ago Windsurf Magazine or Boards in the UK organised a "forward loop" get-together. Basically everyone who wanted to forward loop met up at the same beach on a windy weekend, had a lesson from a pro and headed out on the water. Obviously there was a huge amount of competition so most people ended up giving it a go, and the people who didn't got the p*ss taken out of them (in a nice way of course). If the event didn't get windy everyone posted on a forum (after a windy weekend) to say anything along the lines of:

"it was windy and wavy but I bottled it and never went for a loop"
"it was perfect, I went for 4 forwards but landed 0"
"I did it, I landed my first loop!!"

So, who on the forum would be keen to do something similar? If you get out on the water and the wind is strong enough, you have to post a report on this forum to say what you did, what you didn't do and why!

Hopefully this'll help a load of people get over their demons and we'll see a load of "success" posts. And obviously this will make me go for them as well!!!!

Let's start from today - who's in?

I, nor (I'm guessing) do Seabreeze/Laurie hold any responsiblity for broken equipment or body parts from taking up this challenge

Hey Haircut,

It only counts for you if it's a double forward, off flat water, followed by a spock

Maybe Laurie could change the colour of your forum name from blue to gold?!

Or how about the fact that you gain the respect of us all for being the first person?!

Good luck!

tried one once and it hurt real bad... padi is still laughing.

broke a boom, took the nose off the board and nearly knocked myself out

but keen to try again. i got lots of excuses though!!!!

did the loop on the beach thing with haircut. it doesn't hurt one bit. so now am keen again. [}:)]

just need a day when it is not to windy but just windy enough, not too sharky, just the right swell from the exact direction required on my favourite board and a blue sky. plus it needs to be 5 minutes past one on a thursday. [}:)]

I'm in.... will be worth it just to read the post mortems (OK, possibly poor use of that phrase...)

so it's.... bear off, jump, tuck, look back, sheet in hard, say any prayer you can remember....

is that about it???

Do we get a prize for being probably the first here to land ourselves in hospital overnight while going for a forward?

I managed to do it in 1986, and I'm still suffering the phreakin' consequences.

Just finished another course of antibiotics, and got a referral to get another specialist to look at the old damage and see what we can do about going back under the knife.

Trust me- you'd have heard about it if I had pulled off a forward. And you'd still be hearing about it! In fact, I've well visualized that part to QUIETLY anounce to the global windsurfing community, as if it's the first time someone has pulled of the manouevre. So I 'spose I'm in too, except that I'm not going to fess up every time I go out and wimp out.

does one loop, land, then doing another = a double, and do two vulcans in a row = a spock? this is like windsurfing poker

Crash,

I got my helmet yesterday. How high should I jump before committing?

Just imagine, "Sure, I can loop - now I just need to learn to gybe". Now that would be pretty cool to be able to say.

I think if there was a group of us in one location I would definitely give it a go. Any chance of a gathering on Botany Bay?

Regards,
Harrow.

I like these, plagiarised from Boardseeker Magazine:

Here are some facts about the forward loop:

  • If you can chop hop you are technically equipped to tackle it - Harrow
  • Statistically, rigging up is more dangerous than doing a forward - Crash
  • Many of the pro sailors in Britain learned to forward before they could carve gybe - Harrow
  • It is by far the coolest looking windsurfing move - Everyone
  • The whole move can be learned in a day - Excellent!

go the ear plugs folks, for those times when you chicken out half way! Lots of eardrums popped lately.
I am keen Crash, can't make Saturday but maybe at Wanda comp next week when it counts, or at least the wipeouts can be enjoyed.
I best book in for physio the following week!

Er, Crash, I think you forgot this one:

"Any injuries sustained from forwards? Not that I can remember. Quite a few snapped boards though!!!" - Robby Swift, JP team rider.

I've only got two boards, NOT 'a few'!!!

nope - for the first time ever I did two full grubbies today and still there were no salivating women waiting for me on the beach, just Mark and Zoran .

Mark and Zoran, if i ever manage a flakka, would you guys mind running down to the beach wearing a bikini while screaming my name?

Howdy MD I remember her well - lol. I think she wanted a threesome with you and my Dad. You did a good job of avoiding the kiss at the shower, but when she started to get a bit hot towards my dad while sitting on the back of the wagon, he didn't know what to do Her strip off and dip near the rocks was a classic!!

i don't rip the waves apart, they rip me and my stuff apart. Mark and I were thinking about going to Kirra tomorrow (wednesday) but the forecast looks like another NNE. If everyone is planning to meet somewhere not too far away (and within my 3 ft limit it would be fun

Will definately see you over summer

I took up the challenge :D

Well, I can do forwards on port fine but i've always been gumby on starboard and hadn't overcome the fear factor on that side yet (note to self: when you learn something one one side do it on the other straight away otherwise you keep puting it off and off). Anyway nice southerly today here in the Gong and It's a pleasure to report the fear barrier has been over come. First few were fairly hairy, nose diving, backlapping attempts but by the 10th or so they were pretty clean.

It's funny how overcoming the fear on one side doesn't automatically transfer to the other tack. I started to do them on port about 2 seasons ago (on flat water) and tried on starboard initially but was very sketchy. Combine the fact that most of the time I sail in the waves it's a NE wind (harder doing them with the swell imo) and I just never got around to trying them again on starboard.

Sidebar: Anyone got any tips for spocks? I got close today but my sail transfer still lets me down. It seriously annoys me how easy the pros make that look, because god damn it's a hard move...imo :(

Hey Crash,
I am happy to report that I landed my first forward today and I am stoked to say the least. I was up at Longreef at Little Makaha with a few other guys and just went for it off a 2 foot wave and round I went. It was great to sail away for a change. There was also a guy right on the point with a camera taking pics so hopefully the 1st one is on film. I got the guys details so if he gets them to me I will show you next time I see you.
It's something that I will always remember. Like my first shag and it took about the same time to do!!!!!!
Great idea of yours!! I was thinking about it before I went out today. It's all in the mind!!!!!

Good work Roberto!!

I knew I should have got out at Little Makaha - maybe Sunday?! I just need a bigger wave board for the extra confidence.

I gout yesterday and sailed around for a while, boosted some fairly big jumps but couldn't get myself to do the loop. Then I thought, geez this thread was my idea so I have to go for one! And I went for 3 forward loops - not loads but 3 more than I have ever gone for before. My major problem was thinking about the rotation, look backwards etc but didn't get enough pop. I think I need to get out in some proper waves (like 2 foot) that will throw me up in the air so all i have to do is rotate.

It looks like this thread is working!!!
