The GPS speed challenge is excellent, however....

...I have just realised I have not sailed in waves since the last NSW Wavesailing Comp in Gerroa and even then they were 1 foot! All thanks to GPS Speedsailing! I now realise that I won't be getting on the water again until the first event in August at Birubi!

Anyone else had the same problem?!?

I am not much of a wavesailor anyway (although it is a personal goal to get more confident in the waves)... but this weekend I did find myself pushing my footstraps to the outboard positions so I could push that bit harder against the rails in the flat water.

Bloody addictive GPS

Same here haven't been near waves for months, however, what I've rediscovered is my love for speed, and have to admit (blasphemy here), I'm getting more of a buzz from speedsailing than wavesailing (Yes I'll be labelled a traitor to waves.....). For me there's more adrenalin in speedsailing than wavesailing, wavesailing is like a skillful artistic dance with the ocean, and maybe incorporates all the highest skill elements of windsurfing?

The other thing I noticed this year was when I went to Gero and it was blowing true 30knots, instead of rigging down to my 4.2m and smaller board, I could stay out on my 4.7m and bigger board, coz I could just handle everything happening faster, so speedsailing can also help wavesailing in stronger conditions!!

What I've rediscovered also is that speedsailing particularly here around Mandurah, is much more accessible than wavesailing. You just get to do it much more often. Any wind direction will do, no need for swell, it's not crowded, your not fighting for a wave etc.......

Doesn't mean to say I still don't love my wavesailing, as my next 2 family holidays are 2 weeks wavesailing in October, and 2 weeks wavesailing in Jan, so that's evidence of my passion for the waves. But to limit myself to wavesailing, is limiting full-stop.

I've been out in waves maybe twice after the competition started, both times I realised just how cr@p I was. Waves sort the men from the boys

Still, speedsailing has showed me that you can get scared on flat water, especially when it's blowin! And that's what I'm after, anyway, that feeling of mortality, I don't care how I get it [}:)]

Both wave and flat have there moments, i think Shearwater at high tide is a good mixture, with those meter high waves rolling in, hit them at 25/30knts and it feels like 35knts.

i take my gps into the waves with me.

if the waves go flat for a moment then i turn downwind at let it loose on the wave gear.

get some nice flat water sometimes inbetween swell or where the whitewater has killed the chop.

best of both worlds.

As a matter of interest how do your alpha's compare wave gear to speed gear????

I've had one light wind wave session since the challenge started. But I normally don't do a lot of winter wavesailing, it's more bump and jump stuff rather than the nice clean DTL we get in Summer anyway. The young guys have a great time in on shore Gearie's, but that's getting a bit beyond me now.
It'll be interesting to see what happens when spring brings the seabreeze and some nice clean waves. Think the waves will win, at least at the start, I'm hanging out for some heavy "Gs" off the lip, or bottom turns, not to mention a bit of air.

alpha 500

in the waves at dutchies yesterday 17.87
on the flat last time at green island 19.81

much of a muchness really

both with 5m and same wave board in similar wind. but its hard to compare because i wasnt really trying for speed out of turns yesterday.

havent gone out hard in decent winds with slalom board to test it out.

i reckon with the right swell direction itd be possible to go just as fast using the wave to help your turns.

i'm give it a go next time.

I keep meaning to try the wave gear out here in Avi bay, but somehow I've been loading the speed gear on the car and heading to the estuary.
Maybe tomorrow, I'll give it a go.
