I drove over three years ago, still here

Plenty of places to stop, but that all depends where you are driving "over" from It took me a month to drive from NSW, but you could do it in a few days.

You might find some big waves at Hyden and some decent windsurfing at Esperence on the way

* Take lots of CDs
* Go via Bathurst and do a lap of Mt Panorama
* Get used to looking at nothing all day
* Don't let passengers drink before 9am
* Don't volunteer the last driving shift of arvo (non-drivers will crack open refreshments and annoy you).
* Hit golf balls off great australian bight
* Don't book any accomodation (except maybe Eucla). Just drive til you feel like stopping.
* Pose for a photo pretending you are surfing at Wave Rock. I'm sure its never been done before. :)
* Take sailing gear

*when you see red white blue, slow down to legal speed limit
*DONT run outa fuel,its a long walk to the nearset one....
*watch out for the road runner, and emus, and other various wildlife.
*if you get bored by all means DO NOT try car surfing, although its a good way to learn your balance
*buy a carton of sou' west wheet beer....

oh and if your driving with your missus, keep telling her that the roof rack has a really nice view (particually around sunset)

If going solo, don't go insane you want to sail when you get to the west coast.

If you stop and your car won't start, don't take help from John Jarrett (aka Mick Taylor) Sorry, wrong end of country.

Mate and did it before it was sealed, going over was bone dry and windless. Never seen dust so fine, if there was a truck 5 miles in front you couldn't see a thing, filed potholes the size of a car, road looked fairlly level but if you hit one of those at speed you lost the front suspension.
Coming back was big wet, trucks bogged to their axles everywhere, the old FC would stall if you hit water any faster than 15 mph, don't know what was worse, the mud or the dust.
Driving over now is a breeze!!!!!!!

Sail in SA - there are lots of good spots. Start with Cactus and Coffin Bay.

try not to carry your gear on your roof racks,
a few years ago driving accross the plain i approached a large wedgetail eagle eating some roadkill, it took off in my direction as i approached but didn,t quite clear the car, my poor old tiga 275 was torn clean off the racks and the eagle was a little worse for wear.

Normally Adelaide to Perth straight through 24hrs. I have done this trip about a dozen times and will be doing it again in a couple of months, great
The wife and kids fly and I drive so I can take my gear. The problem I have is that once I get to Perth I have another 16hr drive heading north to get home. WA is one big ass state.

If you are coming from the east stop in SA at Robe and of course Boggy.

Fast Eddy. First things first, set a date to head off make sure you vehicle is a well established brand, don’t want to have it break and the local mechanics in some remote spot asks you, its a f...n what,? when you ask him to repair such and such.
Make sure you have a watch with hands, no digital crap, its no good if you get lost(mid morning or afternoon (for best result), face/point 12 o'clock towards sun, dissect midway between hour hand and 12, that’s North approximately. 90 degree to that point is WEST, that’s where you want to head) Stop off at any of and as many recommended point the Forum crew have recommended, don’t ever ask what the day or date is, its never going to be relevant until you get here and need to start earning a crust again.
Beers are for drinking "only after a good session, never for driving, unless you have a mate of course who is with you, who doesn’t like a shandy on a hot day, he drives then each trip should be measured in can/stubby number drive.
Include a camera, so you always remember and can reminisce with your mates in years to come, "I actually drove across this great Country of ours."
Safe trip,
One other thing, if you stay a while say 3-6 months, its all too hard to go back home, you’re here and hooked

Certainly wasn't new greeny, about 5 years old when I bought it,
blew 2 rear tires in one trip in the first 6 months, lots of fun on the gravel road I was on.
New clutch about the 2nd year, (in Gero one Xmas). And the motor year after that.
Think it had had a hard life before I got it, the back floor was very worn. But it did a lot better than the triumph herald I had before that, only lasted 6 months
