She Who Must Be Appeased has given it the green light. MikeyS to drive Melb to Perth via Esperance, Marg. River by himself, sailing at every opportunity and Mrs Mikey and the 2 Mikeyettes to fly to Perth about 10 days later. After at least 1 Friday night at the Elephant and Wheelbarrow, where Mrs Mikey goes whenever she visits her girlfriend, Carol Brady in Perth (she loves getting chatted up by young boys- good for her ego) the whole family will head north with whole Perth Brady Bunch. (He has 3 kids from a former marriage, so does she). Mike Brady has suggested all 12 of us go to Kalbarri for a week, but my research says the sailing is just flat water, which I can get any time in Melbourne.
As it's my windsurfari and I'll cry if I want to, I want to go either to Lancelin or Geraldton. None of the others are sailers. So, my question is, are the beaches and other activities at Lancelin or Geraldton adequate to keep a mob of non-sailers happy while I destroy myself on the water? Or can anyone suggest another spot to keep most of the people happy for most of the time, and my wavesailing need satisfied all the time. I don't need big waves- I'm not that experienced in the surf, but I've been bumping and jumping for nearly 20 years.
And if anyone would like a sailing buddy who will have cold beer to exchange for local knowledge between Esperance and Perth around New Year, drop me a PM.
Cheers

Mikey,
the beaches at both Lancelin and Gero are ok (Gero has more choices) but at New Year ... all things being right with Huey ... it should be windy as.
i.e. swimming and general beach activities with the family till (at the latest) 10am, then the wind starts to kick in and make the beach uncomfortable.
All this depending on the size of the rug rats of course.

Lancelin is just a little fishing town, so theres not much to keep the non windsurfing fraternity busy. There's some huge dunes which are great for sandboarding or dirt biking if your into that.

Gero is a mid sized city so there is the usual raft of restuarants, coffee shops, fashion shops, even KFC and Maccas

BUT I would suggest you visit Lano, Cervantes, Green Head and Gero ... there all great.

Esperence is a really great place to sail - try Twilight beach about 5-10 minutes east of the town. I saw it going off in 2001 and the PWA held a comp there in the late 90's
good luck
From what i know of Geraldton its the better option being a larger town in the region.
cheers

Well done Mikey.

And next year you're gonna "reward" them all with a trip to Hawaii??

Sound's bloody fantastic Mikey, hope your family enjoy being sandblasted!!!

Lancelin is only 1.5 hours north of Perth so maybe you could leave your family in Perth and commute for a couple of day trips.
You can rent beginners and advanced gear on the beach in Lanno so your friends could learn to windsurf which would keep them quiet.

Cervantes is a great place to sail and there's the Pinnacles nearby which will keep the family occupied for about 40 minutes but nothing much else.

There will be a decent sized gang of us staying in Cervantes over Christmas / New year, we'll be the ones nursing our overhangs at thirsty point, drop in for a beer.

Thanks guys. All very helpful. Checked out Twilight Beach (actually west of Esperance) on Google Earth and it looks great. So does Coronation Beach.
And sinker- no it's not sandblasting, it's called dermabrasion! "The more I sail, the more beautiful your complexion becomes, my darling." See, it's really a selfless sport, even if one does have to reward them on Maui. It's all in the spin!
