Bought a spring suit on Friday. As I walk in the door my wife asks "What's that for ?". I tell her it is for sailing in the colder weather.

"I thought you said this would only take up all your time in summer ?" she replied. I explain the physics of thermal inertia and that the water is actually warmer in autumn than summer so really it is 'summer for the water'. She rolls her eyes and walks of in dismay.

Now what am I going to tell her in June when I come home with a steamer?

Harrow, welcome to the dark side of windsurfing.
Im pretty sure everyone out there has a story about the wife, missus, girlfriend etc.
You thought that you are addicted now but wait until you have sailed all year. You become adept at subtle ways of getting out on the water.
Your wife either accepts that you have another mistress or the "under the thumb" rule comes into play.
Get browny points any way you can.
Most of us are lucky, I know I am, my wife loves that I get so much enjoyment out of sailing plus if I stay at home it doesnt take long for her to realise that "the grump" is no fun to be around.
My daughter loves and she comes down to watch me sail occasionally. She wants to learn and i cant wait.
Hope this helps.

ka43, I agree about the kids strategy. I've already got my eldest daughter out on a sea skipp. She's enjoying it, but it will be a few years before she's old enough to take out on the bay. Other thing I've learnt is not to complain about there being no wind, because that seems to count the same as time on the water. So best not to talk about it at all, and then slip away whenever possible.

BTW, why is it so addictive? I know it is, but I can't put my finger on why. I mean, you're just going back and forth. Why would you want to do that again and again. That's what my wife doesn't get.

I bought a steamer 2 weeks ago and have it stashed in a corner of my daughters wardrobe.........go figure my 9 year old daughter knows about the steamer but the wife doesn't....
I feel for you Harrow,
and yes I also am looking for a kids board for the daughter for next summer.
Harrow, when your wife asks why you got a steamer. Just tell her grasshopper just got one and he hasn't even told his wife yet. It might get you a brownie point.

My ex-wife asked me once, why in the middle of a bitterly cold Melbourne winter I would go and waste the limited family budget we had, on a new pair of boardies and rashie, particularly as I wouldn't get to wear for another 6 months? Well Hun... I said....... You see.... Well the boys are going on a Trip to Maui next week, and one of them had to pull out..... and ...Well Honeybunch I'm gonna need them coz..... I borrowed some money for the spare ticket and I can pay it back over 6 months and......... I'll need them on my Trip to Maui with the boys..... Don't look at me like that sweet..... I'll make it up to ya.....I promise...... Come-on it's the chance of a lifetime.... The look she gave me at that moment I now recognize as: "you've just got yourself a divorce buddy" Maui was fantastic, the boardies and Rashie worked a treat, not as good as the new modern Windwarrior Blastshield , but for it's day was perfect

The ultimate solution is to get her into the sport, fortunately mine is. Mind you I still get a lot of flack for the fact that our social life is worked around the weather forecast.

The other benefit of the partner sailing is that they need a lot of gear, I allways make sure she has the best available. This requires a lot of testing and trial and error. I'm glad she knows her her board like her cars.... wasn't this board a different colour the last time I used it ?...

Another tip, don't ever do a home budget, we did the other day and I got busted badly. May have to get a second job to get my windsurfing budget back into the black.

Yes getting wife involved is a huge bonus, makes life a lot easier, and you do need more gear.
Tell your wife that decrepit's missus will be 62 in a couple of months, and still really enjoys being out there blasting around. And it's almost impossible to explain the attraction, you have to experience it, like sex I guess.

Just say "would you rather me be at the pub getting pissed like most guys or out in the water staying fit and healthy" Puts it into perspective a little for em.

PS Try and limited your actuall pub time, it doesn't help the arguement!

Easiest way to get your wife into sailing is to teach her single, younger sister how to sail. Bang! Instant demand for her own sails so that she can learn as well! That and the fact that she realised that if she wants to see me and the kids on the weekend, she better come with us.

Just tell her you're going sailing whenever you feel like it, no matter what it costs, and she should get back in the kitchen and prepare a nice meal for when you get home (unless you decide to go to the pub after sailing).

p.s Its great being able to post messages using an alias.

harrow you only bought a spring suit. i ordered a super expensive (but warm- essential in tassie)suit from england, which arrived the other day.the missus thought we were saving for baby stuff (due sept), so i had to explain the suit was so i could maximise my time on the water over winter so as to be able to help in spring when baba arrives. (quick thinking). of course come spring this will be forgotten. no the only solution is to actively encourage the other half to shop for as many clothes and shoes as they want, thus allowing you some expenditure. plus you can sail while they're shopping!. actually i'm one of the lucky ones - my only pre-nuptial agreement was unlimited sailing time whenever i wanted, and she's happy for me to do something i love.

Yes, I have a guilt free arrangement with my wife that she can spend as much on lingerie as I spend on gear. Perfect win-win situation, although maybe it's a double win for me. Plus she encourages me to go sailing because, as KA42 says, we are less grumpy after a good session. (ready for the next session, if you know what I mean).

The way I see it Harrow is that you've done it all arse about. You get your self into windsurfing ,then find a wife. That way when she meets you its just something you've always done and it can't be changed, You're good for the rest of your life.
The way you've done it is never going to work (wife then windsurfing) Unfortunately the only solution I can see is a trade in for a newer model.

I can most certainly say that dosent work hoop- everything about a woman is trying to change the man they've hooked.

The only solution is getting a chick that a
a) already windsurfs
b) wants to learn to windsurf (not just willing to learn they dont have enough desire to do it)
c) due to lack of a & b in the world, one that kites (cause you know they will see the light eventually).

MK7... come on... you know kiter chicks are great lol. It's just that if a kiter chick does marry a windsurfer, he will see it all, and become a kiter

btw - I've met you at Wello haven't I, or a different 'Mark'?

Ah Vando… What you don’t know yet…

Can’t you picture it! Boosting, rolling, flipping and unhooking together on our own island and stopping to have lunch.
Then using the kites as something warm and comfortable to sleep on! Works well
It’s a shame you don’t kite !
lol jk – Now from memory, I don’t think I’ve met you?

Now that you guys have aired your fantasies can we get back on topic ... besides it's better sleeping under sails in case it rains (and you still get the star effect cause of the monofilm). I'm a little concerned at vando including me though

Elizabeth we know you have trouble remembering us since you guys have trouble seeing us when you're out there doing all that boosting, rolling, flipping and unhooking. We are those triangle shaped things sailing underneath you- cept for vando his is a little blurred .

If you guys continue to carry on in this suggestive manner you're going to have to answer to the mother superior (Gestalt herself) and you may be asked to leave the celibate silent order of Wind Wanderers. Then where you gunna be, outside with the fornicators and blasphemers on the slippery and breathless road to hell. Ferget the wet suit. You're going to need asbestos.

Actually Grumplestiltskin (I say belatedly- this thread has moved pretty quickly) I have thought that my wife might be using the lingerie when I'm out sailing. What do you think gets me to come back to shore (except for dropping wind)? And anyhow, I don't mind, as long as she gets a video.
And just to prove what a good husband I am, I encouraged her to go from Melbourne to Margaret River to a concert at Leeuwin Estate earlier this year to see her favourite group. So I'll feel absolutely no guilt whatsoever if I say that I'm going to go there too for some Art Series or a wavesail.
NotWal, I'd love to tell you all about it but I'd only feel inadequate in present company. LeeD, etc. Plus I am celebate all the time, except for when I'm forced to perform "marital duties".
