I was just thinking with winter on the way that some of you might be looking for something to fill your spare time. One of my new favorite hobbies is video editing, The learning curve has been long, frustrating and rewarding all at the same time.

With GoPro's being so popular these days along with all the other gadgets that you can record with we are finding our lives ending up on the internet more and more. Every computer is capable of some form of editing and you can achieve almost Hollywood type effects on software that only cost a few hundred dollars or less.

The software that is available today can get quite complicated but the results you can achieve are amazing, With some trial and error you will soon be flying through your videos and uploading them to the web.

I get asked about what software to use, How to convert file types along with many other questions about the editing process. Now I'm no expert and I am still learning every day, So I was thinking if there was a place we could go and post questions, Tips and tricks or anything else to do with the movie making process. There has been many threads over time about different things to do with video editing but they are now scattered through the seabreeze forum. If we had one thread that everyone added to it would make for an easy reference tool for anyone looking for some tips or ideas.

What do you guys think? Is there any interest out there in this sort of thing and would it help you out. It'll give me something to do over winter and I hope some others will pitch in with some ideas and topics and hopefully some Pro's like Matt Holder can throw in some stuff as well.

I've gone from this....

To this in a few months and anyone can do it....

Matt's stuff is good and I've used his tips heaps. I wanted to focus more on post production rather than the filming of the video but it all goes together hand in hand. His stuff is a must for all would be film makers, I agree everyone should checkout his website.

looks like marginal interest in this topic here in the windsurfing section.

However spread across kites,Sup ,surfing it may benefit from a larger catchment

Perhaps this could be a separate area forum - a photography and video section if you like

Laurie might even be able to get GO PRO / Apple / Adobe/ Canon / Panasonic / B and H etc etc to "sponsor" the page with appropriate banners at the top. Could be a money spinner for seabreeze.

It would be a fairly application specific process. I work in a school where they teach video editing. Adobe After Effects is heavily used along with Premier Pro.

I've only used IMovie, very basic but fun.

I am just starting with this, so far using windows live to its maximum capability and slowly trying out sony vegas and also the free one - lightworks.

I have found that lightworks is very powerful but probably needs someone with experience with other editors first due to more complex routes to get effects to work.

You can download a demo sony vegas from theri website and have a try with it before buying, its also quite cheap on amazon for the non pro versions.

I have found it best to use the gopro Cineform software to cut the clips short and then use those clips in the editor. I run an i3 laptop with 6gb ram, you can very cheaply upgrade ram and for 2 minute clips a laptop from the last 5 years has ample processing power.

Cut each clip to 10 seconds or so, any more and they become boring to watch I think. Get a flymount and change your camera angles every half hour and you should have plenty of footage to play with.
