That's my question.

wouldn't it be great for travell etc.

I'm not good enough to notice too much about mast flexing characteristics so I could sacrifice some performance for something that folded up as long as my boom.

How about allthe rig for a wave session fitting in something the size of a golf bag?

i think it would make the mast too stiff and make the flex very wierd.

If you take a waveboard does it have a cover, unless your board is shorter than 2m the mast fits in with the board.

why not have a mast that breaks up into a lot of bits held together with elastic like the batterns in a tent.

and a 2 piece wave board. or 4 . it could connect with a pin system.

why not indeed. I've got a 3 PC mast, but i didn't buy it like that, and i can't find a way of joining part 2 with part 3

Well I know it's not a windsurfer, but a blow cart's case, (www.blowcart.com/) is only 1.18m long and the mast is 4 piece and takes a 4m sail.

I ve seen on ebay a inflatable sailboard with a skinny multi pc mast and 3 or 4 meter sail. looks not very stable and plainingi dont know. but it fits all in a little bag. was around $100 and i thaught ill get it to have some fun with it..someone else made higher bid and it was not more worth for me.

I've already done silly things like use an old broken bottom piece to make a 700mm ext to use a 460 mast on a 9.5m sail.

I didn't care about the flex, It still worked.

I'm sure those that are particular about performance wouldn't bother and perhaps 1piece is the real go.

however when travelling, especially by plane. and having a mast in with my board seems like asking for apressure point to crunch it.

but just how bad would the flex be effected?

a 3.7m skinny may come down to about 1950. how about an extn. how long would the ext be able to be before flex is to the point of detroying your fun?

if you have the right board bag with the mast bits built in it shouldnt crunch the board at all, it sits over the top of the rail and there is padding around the mast.

I imagine if would make the bottom un-naturally full and the top wont twist off as well.

Fly fishing rods, i guess it could be kind of built in to the design- maybe if you used a skinny mast and made it 3 piece then that might be similar. Rods dont have the kind of stresses masts have on them, yes they do bend but they dont really have tension on them whilst bending.

If the first joint is at the boom attachment point would be asking for destruction. Then the next joint would add extra weight high up on the mast where it would be very noticeable?
Ended up with a 3 piecer recently. If I had of thought of this solution would have avoided a cold and scary time after dark.

Hey RAL,
Windsurfing spars are already in 3 pieces.
The tip, base and extension.
How much more clutter do you want ???

I want to carry a couple of wavesails a boom and mast in a bag no longer than the sail bag.
I want to look friendly to my airline checkin chick.

a wave board in a bag by itself looks surfboard normal.

So I ask the techno question again. why not?

RAL,
You ask the techno question,
here's my lo-tec answer.

There's absolutely no reason why a good 3 piece mast can't be made.
However, if your agenda is to fit some wavesails, boom and spar into the one bag for travelling,
how about a sailbag that is sized to take the spar.
A bag made for some big fat-arse sail should fill the bill or custom make one.

Yep, came in about 0930 almost everyday, only got to 10kts some days but others got to 18kts, plenty of kites and a couple of windsurfers at Sanur mostly straight onshore, so good blasting inside the reef, with a few jumps when waves get through the gaps.

Ok Wave,
I also believe there is no reason for not having a 3pc mast.
or at the least a 330cm skinny mast with a 700mm extension.

getting the mast sails and boom into a 175cm bag is a big advantage for air travel. mainly the perception of the Checkin chicks.

and the smaller we get and closer to Golf bag size the easier it will be.

RAL,
You're wishing windsurfing was as easy as kiting when it comes to gear and travelling.
It never will be.
The travelling windsurfer has a cluster **** of gear,
while the mobile kiter has only one coffin bag stuffed full of gear if he's smart.

Back to the 3 piece mast;
Keep in mind sails are shaped and designed for a type of mast flex.
A 3 piece mast would require a different sail shape.
The shape would need to fit in with the extra hard spots (joins).
It's a can of worms.

be proud of the size of your equipment! thats what i say.
windsurf gear, kitesurf gear it's all the same. just sporting stuff.
the end result of your travels makes no difference to lugging stuff around. just follow your dream.

No empathy here, it's better to have a wife that windsurfs than one that whinges how much time and money you're spending on having fun instead of mowing the yard

Why restrict yourself to three piece masts.

I'm sure this technology could be adapted to boards

Hey RAL,

Have you ever considered employing a surf caddy ?
You're a kite-pimp so you must be able to afford it.
