Hi,

I am french and should go to Australia in August. I am looking for a spot where to practize (with a rental shop as I would not bring any stuff) or even to have a trainee session (lessons + eventually lodging)in a kind of club.

Where to go between Byron Bay and the Whitsundays?
A place with or without nightlife?
How is the wind in August? The temperature?
Thanks for your answer as I found info on the west coast but none on the east one.

In august the best area on the east coast is Newcastle or Nelsons Bay.Strong westery winds blow consistantly August through to september but the water will be cold. It is probably further south than you wanted to go but check out www.nswwavesailing.org

Hi Val?rie,

>> "So far, I didn't really get any practical and interesting piece of info from the webmaster who wrote everyone could ask for anything"

I didn't get your email? .. as oj suggests, the nswwavesailing is a good start. If you are thinking of looking into WA, make sure you checkout windsurfwa.com/index.html

August is winter though, so wind will be hit & miss .. cold fronts only .. no juicy seabreezes etc..

Enjoy .. Laurie

i don't really know about anything below queensland.
although they spots that are on the windsurf queensland website would have you thinking queensland is rather crap.. its not..
try golden beach at coloundra onthe sunshine coast.. its got flat water, and it goes out through a channel (gap thing) where you get some good surf. in high winds the surf can get pretty big there..
ummm gold coast is ok.. but the wind is a bit on and off, they broad water at southport is ok for flat water, and burleigh, kirra area are ok for waves.

if you go up north there is a place called Bowen which is execellent for windsurfing. there arn't waves for wavesailing very often but the swell and chop is there so you can do plenty of big jumps, also the water is warm and clean and no shark nets. so you can sail as far as you want, its behind the barrier reef so sharks are not a problem, (not that they ever are when you are on a windsurfer) and the wind is blows often August is a fairly wind time, and there is a beach for every direction of wind. but you can sail off any beach in any wind. and the wind blows consistanly all day. if its 20 knots at 5am its 20 knots at 7pm. oh Bowen is at the top of the whitsundays.. 20min from ayrle beach.

gold coast city, plenty of party
sunshine coast large towns, there are clubs and wot not
bowen, small town, not much night life wich is ok cause you will be too sleepy from windsurfing.. its got farms so if you are picking fruit while here.. thats there..

hi valerie,

I live in Tugun on the Goldcoast. April to September is generally very bad for windless conditions from northern NSW through to Hervey Bay QLD. We get many 10-15 knot days which is too marginal for windsurfing but perfect for kiting as the wind is generally constant. When we do get stronger wind during this time, it often has alot of westerly in it which means gusty offshore conditions. Wellington point on Moreton Bay (Brisbane Area) is about as good as you will find for sailing in westerly-ish winds. It is a rather large bay which allows the wind to clean itself up a bit before it reaches the point. September to March is southern QLD's best wind perioid (summer).

North queensland has it's best wind during april to september (winter), and it is generaly easterly-ish onshore, so I would recommend heading further north like Curac suggested. I have been to Bowen a few times and it was always blowing it's head off. At least you will have warm waters, no dangerous marine life, and no humidity during winter.

cheers

Hi Curac.

I don't think we ever get "big ass" waves here. Sometimes after a cyclone it gets to 2.5 - 5 metre swells which seem to equate to 3 metre waves. It is very rare. We only had 2 smallish cyclones up north this year. Only one epic wave sailing day to report. Big swells produce great wave sailing at Currumbin Rock (point break and sandy bottom), also called "the alley". It needs a e/se breeze, but once again we need a cylcone to get an e/se strong enough to make it worth going out. Usually the stronger winds are ne or se. Ne is onshore and se is too protected by coolangatta headland for sailing at Currumbin.

I'm sorry, but I really don't know what to suggest for wave sailing in Queensland.

Just south of the border there are some better spots.

Kingscliff - has nice point break/sandy based waves on a true southeaster and northeaster. You just swap sides of the river mouth depending on wind direction.

Lennox Head - excellent NE and nice clean waves.

Flat Rock / Sharpes Beach - great in either ne or se

Ballina River mouth

They are all within an hours drive south of the nsw/qld border and in my humble opinion offer better sailing than anything here we have in qld. I'd imagine what qld'ers call big would probably be average for you wa'ers. I certainly haven't seen anything that compares with what I have seen on victorias coast.

cheers

Rick

Thanx a lot to everyone of you : your advice is useful and I'll go north (Bowen or Hervey bay).
And what about Calounda/ Marooky?
I notice that windsurf is not really present on the East Coast maybe because of surfers...? The west seems to be paradise in summer but not my level....
If you need some info on french spots (atlantical or mediterranean ones), do not hesitate to get in touch with me: I'll be glad to help you.

Donc si tu te gaver de planche n'hesite pas un jour a venir tester les spots de WA ( en ete.. )

enjoy your time on the east coast!!

Valerie,

Cairns, or Green Island which is located off shore from Cairns, is a very popular windy spot in the winter months. Cairns is protected by the Barrier Reef so you get swells but no breaking waves so this ,may suit you. Green Island is by the edge of the reef so you get waves, but it requires a boat trip across. I think you will actually need to go further north than Hervey Bay. At least Bundaberg or northward to get the better winter winds.

Caloundra is on the SunshineCoast, and is only 45 minutes north of brisbane, so it is not far enough north for winter wind. You need to drive one full day north of brisbane before you hit winter winds. To give you an idea it takes me 64 hours (spread over 4 days) to drive from the bottom of the east coast to the top of the east coast of Australia. Two full days of driving (16 hours per day) will get me to Cairns from here in Tugun. Your best option may be to fly into Rockhampton from Sydney. Rockhampton is a pretty good startingpoint for exploring northern qld.

Please be aware that windsurfing in QLD is not like it is in Europe, and you will find that there are very few places to hire modern equipment. Over the past 10 years the sport has diminished. It was very big in the 80's. You will probably have to purchase your equipment and then sell it before you leave (unless you take it home).
I hope you enjoy it all the same!

Cheers

Rick

LOL! !!!!

Sorry for the others not able to join the froggy group : we indulge in speaking our native tongue but Letski is the one who began…
French, English , Spanish, Chinese if you want to, but no Russian….
By the way, I am very polite, on ground and on the water. Especially when I fear to meet across some excited/harsh guys.

It appears I would be refrained by the lack of equipment. As I would be travelling only with domestic flights, no car…I can’t take my stuff with me from France and I fear not to find proper equipment in shops near the spots I would find.

Sinon on lache Monsieur Hardman.[}:)]
Merci pour lui.

My dear Frog's

Isn't it interesting how the French can create a legend out of someone being an idiot

The hardest thing about me is is my appendage on a strong wind day

If you really want to intimidate someone You could send me around in my G-String on a 30 knot day, if he's genitally challenged, he'll be really intimidated

Hi Rick.

I think we have sailed together at Currumbin. Do you have the Naish board and white van? I had the older yellow WA board and older pryde sail.
