This forum thread has been established to track ideas and discussion about:
1) Administration of WV - Incorporation?, Insurance? Membership?
following a successful meeting held tonight for Windsurfing Victoria at Parkdale Yacht Club. There were a number of issues discussed wth the five main areas being:
1) Administration of WV - Incorporation?, Insurance? Membership?
2) How to grow the sport in Victoria - Trainers? Youth? Accreditation?
3) Event Ideas - Racing - Formula / Slalom / Speed / Retro / Wally / Fun / Supercross
4) Event Ideas - Wave / Freestyle / Expression / Supercross
5) Social Events and the Web Site

The meeting was a great forum but most likely there are many views, ideas and opinions yet to be voiced. Please utilise this thread to register your thoughts on the topic in bold above whether you are a member of WV, a Victorian windsurfer or from some other part of the country with a useful opinion.

This aspect of the night was good & frustruating. Good because competent people were elected to run WV. Frustrating because insurance and litigation seems to have killed our sport to some extent.

AWA 3rd party liability doesn't cover members involved in the event - I didn't realise that. General acceptance that taking part in an event comes with some risk that we were all prepared to wear. Member to member insurance is far too costly. Maybe we should get sponsored by CGU and put their sticker on our sails in return for cheaper premium?

Frustration too with trying to get members paid up prior to events. Point was raised that if you sign up on the day of an event it can be very difficult to prove in a court of law - thus meaning that you and the organisers are in a very sketchy position. A general feeling that signing up on the day should be discouraged by either: disallowing it altogether, making it incur a higher fee, making people do it at a pre-determined location where their names can be posted on the net at a particular time and date to avoid confusion in courts.

Membership fee of $50 discussed. I for one am prepared to pay a little more if necessary. Compared to the amount of money I blow on the sport in a year - this is nothing! The difference between $50 and $60 isn't too bad. Maybe we should bump up the event fee instead so that it becomes more of a user pay system?? Pay your cheap $50 membership and then $20 per event? May start to build coffers for running better events / post event functions? Perhaps have normal members and racing members? The topic of incorporation was wrapped into all the insurance / cost debate. Do any other Aussie Associations have some experience with incorporation that they can share??

Think about how much you'd pay for a round of golf at a nice course... How much to see a movie... How much in petrol do you pay to drive to the coast and back each night / weekend...

One of the discussion's last night was about getting something for your membership dollar. One idea that is successful with some yacht clubs in Australia is to have car window stickers that show that you're a paid up member. The colour of the sticker changes each year and indicates whether you are paid up or not. I have seen treated as status symbols. Some people leaving the previous year(s) stickers on to demonstrate long standing membership. These stickers don't need to be large & that keeps cost down. The same size and shape could be stuck on people's sails to give an on water presence to the membership drive.

Another idea could be to offer a WV rash vest if you are willing to pay some extra $$ with the membership fee - with a good colour / design these would become something of a statement too. Once again Colour could change each year too.

Do any of the shops offer special rates to members? Even a small 5% off (which you can probably bargain for anyway) could encourage membership. Shops could have forms at the counter ready. You buy a $1000 sail - for $50 membership you get $50 off - why not join? Anyway, not sure what margins the shops run with and how they would feel about this idea...Certainly at the point of sale is an excellent time to encourage membership and push the 3rd party liability insurance angle. Perhaps you could join the mailing list without being a member so you know what events are coming up, and can stay up to date with what's going on. Obviously a membership card would be good - this could be made into a car key ring rather than a card - stops it from chunking up your wallet & then is always with you when you go to shop / beach / event.

Enough from me - what do you think?

The most apealing aspect of membership to me is the insurance. Does the third party insurance cover for incidents that may occur in day to day sailing or is it only valid during competitions?

The standard insurance applies 24 hours a day every day of the year. It applies to any injury you may effect to a third party. For instance if you ran into a swimmer in the water or your rig was picked up and knocked someone over you would be covered for the damages that those people might suit you for. Things like lost earning, medical expenses etc. The things that aren't covered are what are termed member to member incidents. If you and I are members and we run into each other then we are not covered. If we're in an event we're not covered by the standard insurance. Other insurance is available but is very expensive. This is why you sign disclaimers etc before events. You yourself are not covered for damage you may do to yourself. Hope that helps a little. Main thing is that when someone decides to surface from a scuba dive and you dent their head with your fin you should be covered.

Yep, sounds good as thats exactly what I am looking for. Am getting more and more paranoid sailing at Elwood and having try hard triathletes swimming right in the zone where we are coming into gybe and pull up. Where can I sign up?!
