FORMULA RACING – Tempted to course race? Now’s the time to get kitted up and get into it. We’ve got our State series coming up with the first of the series on Sunday the 17th of October. There are the National Titles in Melbourne in January and the World Titles in Melbourne late next year. If there are budding World Champions out there, sailors who just can't resist that competitive urge, or youngsters who’d love to get into racing - we’d like to do all we can to encourage you into it. If you haven't given those big boards a try - borrow one soon - planing in no knots is quite fun....

Check out www.windsurfingwa.org.au for more details.

Iwould just like to say that i think WWA might be missing the point here, people who are just starting or interested in formula racing are not really concerned about state titles, for a start the words state titles would scare the would be potential racer off plus the price of comming down and having a go to see if they even like formula racing will cost them $70 bloody dollars fair go .
Windsurfing is about fun thats why on any given good day you can see 100s of sailors on the river but only 12 at a race meeting.
Chad you have asked why in the past people dont attend races this is why , make it fun make it accessable and not $70 to try it , Paul D

Paul D,
I am just the one that posts stuff on Seabreeze.
I do not have permission to change things that people ask me to post.
This is the race committees role to determine pricing.

I totally disagree with paying $70-80 for racing.
I would only want to pay $50 for all 4 races.
As a result I will probably turn up to all races, but if the weather doesnt suit my equipment, i aint going to be racing.

So in future Paul and other Seabreeze users., any issues you may have, can you direct them towards the President of WWA or Vice president of WWA please.I dont want to hear about them cause I have so many other WWA issues to deal with. and the above people are in direct responsibily of the issue at hand. Their details are on the WWA website.

You guys must understand that I am not the front person of WWA, the above guys are. Im just the guy who gets given stuff to post on the web.

Regards
Chad Silver

Paul,
This is why people need to join WWA and attend the meetings to have some input so they don't miss the point.
The cost may not be over the top.
Last year as a sponsor we gave everyone about $80:00 worth of give aways whether they paid for 1 week or 3, $50:00 or $60:00 max.
After the last week of racing there was a free BBQ supplied by WWA, some windcheaters were given away by another sponsor and Nedlands Yacht Club supplied trophies.Bloody good value! Not sure what's planned for sponsorship this year though.
I do think that to encourage the newby racers it would be a good idea if it was free for at least their first event, say for the entire novice class. it wouldn't seem so serious and a bit more fun for them.

We need more people to help out..
We are limited on man power at the moment.
You wont believe how much organising there is to do until you are on the committee...

Good stuff! My thoughts about racing are put down at www.seabreeze.com.au/info/racing.asp . It's awesome fun.

I reckon the $20 is good value for the opportunity to pit your skills against others in a controlled racing environment. i.e. WWA volunteers set up buoys (need a boat), provide controlled starts, are properly officiated, people scoring, trophies, etc...

PLUS, you'll be racing against some of the better sailors, so there's a huge learning curve to be had. Coming last is a great motivator to improve your sailing skills, which in turn brings more fun

Have fun .. Lozza

Hey guys could everyone whose sailing in the comp over the next 3 weeks please bring their lifejackets down and wear them. The yacht club went all safety nazi after someone drowned while sailing 2 weekends ago. Can u please remind all your fellow competitors aswell.

This weekend we will try and include a "wallys" class so people new to racing can finish sooner and everyone can have more races and the top guys longer races. I will also try to avoid confusion about start times... more will be explained at the briefing.

Cheers Alex

When will the results be posted?
Checked the WWA site and nothing.
This was one of the biggest complaints from last year.

To someone that has not ever been to a race, what sort of equipment qualifies as Formula. I know they are wide boards with big sails, but is there a list of what is legal and what is not?

Does equipment get scruteenised (sp) berfore it gets raced?

Cheers

Course racing in wa is not strictly formula at the moment just rock up with what you can get hold of.
Formula rules may be found here www.formulawindsurfing.org/

WWA does not follow any strict formula rules. We have always tended to follow PWA course rules where any equipment (sail worthy) is legal.
Just a mention to all racers, the priority rule is in place for this event and as the forecast looks like 20knts plus on Sunday, there might be slalom happening. Come prepared!

Not sure on WWA priority rules, however I thought the beauty of Formula was the ability to cater for a wide range of sailing abilities, body weight, sail sizes etc...and seeing that it is the "Formula Windsurfing State Titles" isnt 20 kts about light on to be stopping Formula racing??
I am very confident that Nationals on East Coast will be held in way over 20 kts as per previous East Coast State and National events.
Given the limited number of FW events over the 04/05 calendar and the FW National event qualification criteria, I would have thougfht fW racing would be held in wind strengths well over 20kts?
Besides it makes for a challenging event!!
Keen on thoughts?

the fact that this is the Nation FORMULA selection series will be interesting when determining if we sail course or slalom..
I know if its slalom im probably wont be racing..

Let see... "Pelican Point Windsports - State Formula Class Titles"

Can't see the word slalom in there. Nothing about only for lightweights with big sails. It's not race series or course series or priority course but WA Formula Titles.

Just my view....

I think the whole idea of racing is the enjoy what you are doing.

It was great to see the priority rule being used. All sailors concerned had a great time with figure 8 slalom. The general consensus was to go to slalom espacially after seeing the catapults on formula gear.
