Hello to All,

I've been windsurfing for 20 years at Pelican Point and I think the water quality has deteriated a fair bit. I was there the other day and noticed it was a bit on the nose, and there was far more mossy weed, the slimy stuff covering the bottom of the bank. What do you think, how sick is the river?

The weed only appeared after that big front went through two weeks ago on a very low spring tide. The weed was scoured off the bottom where it usually grows and was deposited on the sandbanks and shore.

As I understand it:

The snot weed is from inflated levels of phosphorous in the water. This is partially caused by the loss of natural reeds at the waters edge through development of the foreshore, but MAINLY due to agricultural fertilisers being over used by those up-stream.

The very same people who voted down daylight saving...

I've noticed it around this time every year, but this season it appears to be a bit worse. I wouldn't want to be living in stinky stinky Como this summer.

The river is dying.

Look at the recent deaths of dolphins. Wonder what the pollutions levels are doing to us poor suckers that sail in it.

Remember the days when there used to be prawning on the river. Would be a brave man to eat those prawns now ....... Or to eat the fish.

Nothing will be done ....... it is all too hard and the pollies will argue that is no hard proof that the system is R/S. There will be studies, but they will be inconclusive ....

We will wait untill the river ecosystem totally collapses and then we will fix it (or try to). And of course that worked for the Rapa Nui?

Meanwhile keep on smiling, and enjoy the sailing as we go down the gurgler. Just keep an eye out for the patches of dead fish/dolphins/sharks....

I personally think that the dolphin deaths have something to do with the herbicide spill in the Western Suburbs. The contractors claim it was just water with red food dye going down the drain...haha...yeah right! It may have killed (or slowed down)lots of smaller fish near the storm water outlet and then the dolphins ate them.

I don't believe the dolphin deaths are indicative of the overall health of the river. Its not great, but it is a world away from what Sydney has done to the Paramatta and Cook rivers. You'd be lucky to see any dolphins (dead or alive) in the sydney rivers.

Now how to get the f***ing smokers to stop throwing their butts in the drains, on the street, in the sand, in the water? What is it with the link between smokers and attitude problems?

But I do agree that we should enjoy it while we can.

Sydney harbour used to be dirty but these days not the case. Take a trip over there and have a look there are sharks and plenty of fish in there.
