I am looking for a smaller sail for flat water sailing on my JP X-ride 150.

Currently I have a big 7.5m NP Excess and (as the name suggests) is too big when the wind picks up.

Any suggestions on buying either a smaller Wave or Freeride sail - I am attracted to the price of 2nd hand wave sails.

I couldn't find an existing topic on this so appologies if already covered.

Any thoughts very useful. Thanks

from my recent experience, when your on such a large board, when the wind does pick up, its not just the sail that will be too big. I.e the board really wont suit big winds with a smaller sail. Look at what JP say the smallest rec sail for that board is and maybe go with that. I dont think a wave sail will have enough guts in it for a larger board.

I use a 9.0 and 8.1 with my 161ltr board for moderate winds and the same along with a 6.6 on a 128ltr board for 20knts+. I am over 100kg hence why I have larger boards

Have rigged your 7.5 with max downhaul for when the wind picks up? how heavy are you?

remember stronger the wind smaller the sail, smaller the sail further back in the mast track, further back in the mast track more'bounce'. but you guys already knew that

a bigger board will go over and bounce over the chop, where as a smaller literage board will go 'through' 80kgs, using a 7.5m sail must be 12-15 knots then??
i live in WA the biggest sail and board i comfortably use is a 6.5, or a 7.3 for speed sailing, and a 110 litre board, and im a solid 100kgs, usually i would sail a 98l board and a 5.4 or 5.8m sail, suits me from freeride to freestyle and occasional wave sail

Your are best to look at a sail range gap around 1.5 to 1m therefore go for a 6.0 to 6.5 careful on some of the smaller sails might not suit your mast (which i assume would be a 460) if it was be i would go for a no cam freeride more lowerend than wave and better suited to wide style boards
