I see so many people out blasting on Botany Bay with wave sails, and I'm sure they don't all go out in the surf.

Why do they use wave sails instead of freeride or slalom sails? Or doesn't it really make that much difference unless you are racing or trying to record a maximum speed on your GPS?

Regards,
Harrow.

Maybe it's like the post on riding big stuff. Only having a wave sail is a good excuse for not going REALLY fast!
Maybe they're a bit cheaper?
Built a bit stronger?
And if there's a chance you might get in the surf-------------

I use a NP search 5.8 on occasion.

It may not have camms but it has good Grunt and is quite stable.

The hardy fella is know to run 30+ knots on ezzy wave sails.

It can be done, up against a race sail you will lose out, but you can still go quick.

i use both.
0-25 knots race gear all the way. which is 90% of my sailing
race for 7.5m and up

20-30 knots and i like to bump and jump, go in the surf etc.
for me. wave gear 6.4m and down

wave sails are,

cheaper, 30-50% cheaper
easier to rig,
almost bullet proof,
loads of fun and light,
and not that slow.

when you are talking 30knts+ southerly at Botany Bay I doubt you will get alot more speed on a race sail combined with a slalom board. Maybe if you are Bjorn Dunkerbeck.

With the chop you get there you will be spending most of your time trying to keep the board on the water.

Also found that Neil Pryde wave sails (especially the Search range) have enough power to easily keep up with a race sail in 30knots.+ combined with chop.

On the other hand wouldn't mind trying a T1 65 with a 5.8 NP RS6 in 30knts. . I am sure that would be a fast combo.

I was using an Ezzy SE Wave 5.5 and did the fastest times of my life, it was gusty to around 30kts, and managed a (63.7 km/h) 34.4 knot run, so wave sails can certainly go fast. Would I have gone faster on my 5.8 slalom sail, probably, but didn't feel safe to, so if ya wanna play it safer, in more extreme conditions then wave sails are the go, particularly if choppy, if dead flat like Sandy Point, then you'll always be faster on a slalom sail.

Photo attached of that day on the 5.5, constantly doing runs over 60 km/h.
