What sort of waves are you after?
Do you like nice big powerful waves, or more comfortable in small beach breaks? There may be a decent spot nearby but if shallow reef breaks aren't to your liking then might have to drive elsewhere, or stick to the harbour.

Comrade MK
I know of this Taranaki... I have sailed him before and much liking of him BUT he is a long way south of Auckland... I be needing something of much closer
Comrade Filth_man
Bring on your recomendations of shallow reef breaks or whatever waves are around this area for ceratin yar
I be taking surf board as this can be packed with armaments but windsurfing kit has been dubbed to long by KGB Officials (since the falling of communism things have been going to the bad times for ex agents for sure yar)
I not want to be sailing in harbour... I doing much surveilance work around harbour so will be needing proper wave loaction for the blowing off of steam
You be helping of me with good location for wave sailing yar ?

Don't worry about your sailing gear. Just take a good pair of velcro gloves and join in with the local customs if you know what I mean

Also if you take your new found friend to the edge of a cliff they'll push back for extra satisfaction, i'm told.

There are not many good options for down the line waves in Auckland. Check this site for general info www.windsurf.co.nz/windsurf_weather_alk.asp
1. Muriwai on the West coast ....good waves with SW wind but often closed out above 2m. Strong current and you will break a mast if you fall.
2.Takapuna North Shore ...can be good fun waves with Cyclone swell and NE

Hera are a few more options.
3. Orewa ..about 25km North of Auckland. Can be very good onshore waves with ENE wind and Cyclone swell.
4.Omaha beach...1 hour North, similar to Orewa but bigger swell.
You might be able to rent gear from Brian at PT Chev sailboards, he has good starboard demo gear.
5.Raglan.....2hours south. Good waves on the river bar in SW wind. Break down on an outgoing tide and you will be found in Tassie!.

Check virtual Buoys before you go over.

Look at Taranaki region. If you see 2-3m 10+ sec SW swell and SE -SW wind. +15Knots take your own gear. Its worth the 4-5 hour drive South from Auckland. As good as Maui when it is on. Go to the surf shop in Oakura and they will tell you which spot is on. You might also be able to rent gear from Jamie at Carbon Art.
