We will be moving from Canada to Brisbane in May 2005. I was wondering if Windsurfing in SE QLD is stricltly flatwater (Bay) or if there is an active wave community? If there are wavespots, where would they be?
I like both - flatwater and waves. Although, as far as my sanity goes, I need occasionally a mental fix in huge swell. I hope there is any in SE QLD.

Send me your comments. I appreciate it!!!

Brisbane is not actually on the coast. You have to travel about a half hour drive to the nearest breaking waves (Bribie Island to the north, or Surfers Paradise to the south). Brisbane is on Moreton Bay, which is a large expanse of water but it is relatively protected. You do get some large ramps there for some jumping and has good wind. You can sail there on any wind direction, but no wave riding. Only a handfull of guys sail in the surf nowadays as most of the really good ones have gone to kiting because of the lack of strong wind on the east coast. We have beautiful beaches here, but they are generally just beach breaks and are pretty revolting for riding compared to that of Australia's west coast. Our best season for wind starts around August through to March.

some info here

Brisbane city is below the north symbol, and inland from Wynnum/Manly. It is good rampy sailing at Manly during the summer and probably your closest popular sailing spot from the city for sailing on the bay.

If you are as keen about windsurfing as you sound dont move to Brisbane or anywhere on the east coast. You might get some action on the sunshine coast but no where else, this is why i now live in Perth. I lived on the Gold coast for 30 years great for surfing and partying but unless your happy in 8 knots summer here the doctor
visits on a daily basis from about 10 or 11 am untill dark or untill you are all looped out wednesday was a good day 2.9 to 4.2 and these are not just numbers they are full power hold on the seabreese is just about to kick in sail sizes. Its not all the time.Summer is 15 to 25 knts most days and the winter fronts can be up to 50-60 knts . The only wind to look forward to is the 10 year storm which comes every 15 years or so .Go west young man Go west

NSW and VIC apparenlty have some good wave sailing..

i think in qld prolly the gold coast would be best for wavesailing.. some places on some days.. not many people go out though.. most stay to flat water..
gold coast is about an hour from brisbane city.. or less depending on how much you want to go over the speed limit..

The Alley (currumbin creek mouth) goes off for wave sailing,or drive 1.5 hours south of brisvegas to byron or lennox heads for more wavesailing spots. Must admit, nothing compared to the west coast

yes indeed currumbin alley is the pick of the spots as i was born and bread in cuurumbin i use to live acrosss the road from it and would leave my gear rigged all the time in the garage and wait and watch, but once you get the taste for some serious action you,ll find you cant get it enough .I had some great days there but they where few and far between the smallest sail i used was 5.3 only once mainly 5.7 -5.9 its just not cricket. as for a 4.7 never heard of it the up side is it never gets cold you dont need a wettie ,but if your set on the east coast pack only big gear and a surf board .peace out . west coaster
