now ps boy, if you want retro then thats cool and there are soooo many boards from that era which all tried to improve on the windsurfer one design or the dufour wing. all the crazy euro companies tried to make the high wind performance better with flatter tail rockers and larger fins, but this made these three and a half meter giants slow tuning dogs in light winds and gee how much fun in 25 knots fog horn alert!!!!

so you want light wind fun get a dufour wing, or a one design both with retracto dagger.

or the ultimate, a division two hull like a crit d2(my favourite), a mistral m1 or similar. these babies fly like the wind!!!!!

No fun to sail? I've been windsurfing for longer than I care to remember (ie 1978) including Raceboards, Slalom and Waves up to world title level, and love sailing a One Design. They're surprisingly quick in many conditions, tack on a dime, and you can just forget about the gear and concentrate on the sport, the wind and the water.

I agree with DrJ that "orphan" old boards are a problem as regards parts, but the good polyethelene boards live forever; the One Design I normally use is probably a 1986 model and has a single ding (which doesn't seem to have affected anything).

As far as comparison with a wideboard goes, the One Design is pretty competitive with the RSX in confined waters. In strong steady winds the RSX is of course much faster downwind, but in your normal Sydney wind there's very little in it. Formula is 50% quicker or more but sails about 50% as often (in my experience)....it all gets down to personal taste.

Hey Greenleader, I know where there's an M1 or the Aussie copy, but transport could be a problem. I have just given away two D2s due to lack of storage space, but there's no way I'm giving up the Lechner!
