Looking at getting one, seems to be a few available on eBay.... the usual "item location" is Sydney but you know damn well it is Wing Wong Shonky Electronics in a laneway in Honk Kong.

Anyone know of a good brand? Any to be wary of? Don't really want to spend $120 on something from eBay cos maybe the batteries in the sender unit for the wireless ones only lasts a month... don't wanna be up on the roof every 30days! Likewise don't wanna be ripped orf at tricky dickies or tandy if I can get same thing cheaper...???

Also any ones available that just do wind speed and direction not rain/humidity/barometer/temp/blah/blah

Mark,
you can make a very cheap anenometer, out of a bike speedo. It's not wireless of course, you need to run a lead to the display. If you're interested I'll dig up the instructions

Hmmm.... never thought of it!!! and it is pretty obvious huh. oh well I'm not that bright.
More interested in direction though, here in winter if it is WNW you drive 10km one way...... if it is NW you drive 20km the other... very annoying if you get it wrong hahahhaa....... esp if it is on the change

Unless you're in the open, a weather van will swing around more than that with turbulance of neighbouring roofs, mine does anyway.

Guys

You can get wireless bike speedos now - I bought one in Europe 18 months ago, and I'm sure that CATEYE does a basic one for around $80 - $100.

Cheers

I got one from Jaycar for my wife for christmas. It works great, and unlike most of the e-bay ones it keeps a record of the maximum and minimum recordings reached, (which you can reset once you've looked at them), so you can see how much wind you missed out on when you were off doing whatever you were doing instead of sailing.

Australian Geographic has 'em. Not sure of price competetiveness...

Hi Mark - I recently bought a wireless wind station from La Crosse Technology (model WS3502). I haven't installed it yet so I can't vouch for performance but it has all the features I was looking for. Has wind speed in knots (some stations only read in kilometres per hour or miles per hour!) & wind direction plus barometer. No temperature or humidity. Shows max wind & various alarms etc. You can download to computer for history analysis etc. - software supplied. Remote unit runs on batteries or mains power when connected to display unit using cable supplied (uses standard RJ12 phone plugs). Purchased from the Weather Shop (Sydney 02 9679 0688) price $298 incl courier to Qld. Well worth a look on their website

Strewth I could buy a bigger board for that

Was after a bit cheaper............but then again your premium model does make me wonder if $120 on eBay for the same functions is maybe a piece of sh!t ?????????
