My old faithful 6m sail (Ezzy Axis) is about to die so I was wondering what people would recommend for a 6m - 6.5m 2-cam freeride sail. Severene Overdrive? Neil Pryde V8? Ezzy Infinity? others? If anyone has one of these I'd be interested to hear your thoughts.

Cheers

V8 of course, if you want the best performance.Get an 05 or 06 model and use at least an X6 mast. If you can possibly test some I'd also look at overdrive, Naish redline, and Gaastra gtx. Can't speak for the others, but with a V8, when you go sailing and the wind picks up stronger than when you hit the water, you don't need to change down to a smaller size while most people will have to.

Go with the Ifinity as you can also use it as a 1 cam or no cam sail and it still performs very well. Great wind range and Ezzy durability.

hi there,

im running a 6.5 Gaastra gtx, it is my 90% sail, huge wind range, from say 15kn to 30kn, just adjust outhaul seems to do the trick. Everytime I think I should have a smaller sail, this thing amazes me, very, very rarely feel overpowered, but can still get going in mediocre winds. good choice. but.... ive also heard great things about v8.

Gday Brett I’ve been using AEROTECH sails for about 9 years.
The last set I got 7 years out of them.
I recently bought a new set 5.0,6.0,7.0 AEROTECH Rapid-fire sails.
These are a 2 cam Slalom/freeride sail apart from the 5.0 which only has 1 cam. I’ve been really impressed with the performance of these sails. I recently went on a trip down to Sandy Point last October with a bunch of guys from Queensland. I was a bit concerned how I would go against some of the other guys with fully cambered race sails. This was not the case I ended up with 38 knots over 500M and 42 knots Max Speeds with my 6.0 Rapid-fire. Not bad for a freeride sail. Definitely worth looking at.

Ok the concensous so far is that the Neil Pryde V8 is the sail of choice but I shouldn't expect it to last as long as other sails. Some people say they must have the right mast others say its not so important for the V8. Anyone out there using a V8 on a standard diameter mast of 30%. Am I dreaming here, do I need to get a good mast too?

The Gasstra GTX also gets one vote. Not too many people on these it seems.

If I want the sail to last the longest get the Ezzy but this will be at the cost of performance.

As for the Aerotech, I have a 7.0m Aerotech Air and I have found it to be an average sail with not so good build quality. Its the 2004 version I think so maybe things have changed over the years (it was cheaper than other sails however, so you get what you pay for). Maybe the Air was just not one of thier better sails?

I think this is a prob across most of the brands.Im pretty happy with mine so far.I prob sail 3 times as much as most people.
Ive seen other brands stitching fall apart and the mono last 2 years.
Most of them are all made in china.Just because you pay more doesn't mean you getting better Quality.

The only thing I have against aerotech is their dacron material and seam material looks cheap.

I have a 06 7.5m V8 and it's a great sail, works from 12-25 knots. The 06 is a bit softer than the O5 and twists off better. Some of the 05 were prone to luff tears. The V8 does lean more towards race then free ride. Wide luff pocket and a bit more of a process to rig, plus you will need a D haul tool as it needs a lot of DH force. If you want something a little more free ride oriened then the V6 is another 2 cam option. If you are going to spend the money on a V8 I would buy the X6 mast, I heard there were some good deals going on the mast around $450-500.

bmanners,

I used to be a Neil Pryde fan but started losing interest when the durability of these sails was poor - the sail shape seems to put a lot of luff pocket pressure about 1 m above the boom. I had a great experience when I landed a 3 foot jump to have a the Pryde V8 6.5 rip from mase to the leach - completely through the reinforcing tape - this really cured buying Prydes for me. The best part of this is that the guy who sold me the sail was sailing right near me and saw it happen - The sail was replaced under warranty - but it cured me of buying a Pryde again.

Ezzy Infinity - I have just divested myself of an '05 6.6 2 cam model. These are nice durable sails that have excellent performance when they are fully or over-powered (I can hold the a 5.7 Ezzy in 30+ knots of breeze). In light to moderate conditions these sails lack bottom end. These sails are very finicky to trim with very minor adjustments making major differences in rig performance.

I have recently purchased a Naish Reline 7.0 and am very happy with the performance - good bottom end power, great top end. Love the cut-away boom/clew setting which makes the sail feel like it is smaller than it really is - sail gybes very nicely, with good off the wind power.

Going one step further to a full race sail(such as a Stealth) - you need to be able to water start very well in order to cope with such a sail.

- J

Go for last years V8 with the widish luff tube. That way the mono doesnt get too wrinkled.

Mono only dosent get crinkled provided you rig with the cams off. Otherwise less luff curve = less crinkles (v8 has a fair bit). I've also put a loop of rope through my sail tops then I can put it around a pole/peg/whatever to pull the mast out when derigging.

Long term I would be worried about the availability of coloured monofilm for repairs.

You might like to consider the Tushingham Lightning 6.0m or 6.5m. Quality build construction, great wind range, easy rigging, nice price, very good resale value. Just won the UK slalom championship too.

I just got myself a Severne Overdrive 6.5 - stoked. Chose this over the V8 and Tush for quite a few reasons...

- took it for a back to back run with the V8 and it felt faster!
- build quality is higher than V8 - looks more durable.
- can rig with the cams off the mast, unlike Tush.
- has clew cut away, so shorter boom than Tush.

I've probably had it out about a dozen times now, and am loving it.

Tony,

What mast do you use in the Koncept? I have a basic 30% carbon wave mast and might buy a 75% carbon mast in the near future. Will the Koncept work well with these? I dont really want a sail that requires a 100% carbon race mast.

I had a look at the KA Kocept and the Maui Sails MR2 over the last few days. The KA certainly has some good reviews but the build quality looks like it wont last that long (probably makes it a light sail however). Anyone think I'm wrong here?

The Maui Sails MR2 looked well built and the shape looked good but I cant tell if its a good sail until I've had it out on the water. Anyone used one of these?

Cheers

i can't speak for the Concept.

but i have a 2003 6.4 kult, a 2004 5.7 kaos and have ordered but not received an 2005 8.5 formula.

i have also sailed a 2004 9.5 Kontender.

i have never ever had a problem. the 5.7 was second hand after a year in the surf when i bought it and still looks brand new.

the 6.4 i crashed very badly once and should have gone through it but i can't even tell.

the issue is the thickness of the monofilm. thin film from any manufacturer doesn't last as long as thick film. plus i think there are only a couple of factories in the world that make the sails. china, shri lanka etc.

you need to look at warranties. local gear is better for warranty issues. some shops buy gear at a discount because they are meant to cover the warranty themselves. beware this. the shop can tell you to go jump and then you are left high and dry. read the fine print i guess.

Hi Bmanners,

You would not believe my mast selection for my koncept.

It follows a very calculated method of " pull 2 halves out of ute and set extention to suit.

My own masts are just left over halves fron broken ones and defy all logic on mast stiffness selection.

so from my experience either a 430 or a 460 is fine. downhaul till loosness in leach goes about a third towards mast BTW top 2 batterns.
and only 1-2cm of outhaul.

I have been using my Koncept for a couple of seasons and its been abused and treated like crap and is still showing no signs of wear, save for some feathering of seams where it gets dragged on ground etc.
So don't worry about durability and yes the wieght is an advantage.

I now have a 5m, 5.8m, and 6.6m and would not contemplate using anything else on flat water, ie: dragging my mates.

PS I sell them so you better treat this as a Biased comment, but I also sell North, Naish, Sailworks, HotsailsMaui. so I maybe be biased another way as well.
