G'day all,

My old man in thinking about getting back into windsurfing again just as an occasional sailor, He hasn't really been out in about 20 years but recently picked up an old wally board and was having fun cruzing around on that until a slight altercation with a rock left
the board a little worse for ware and un-repairable :( so i was wondering what ppl would recommend for him. He cannot waterstart so he would need a board that will allow him to uphaul start his weight is about 90kg and his 6ft tall. eventually i would like to get him into formula but because the boards are so fragile i dont think he should get one right away.
Thanks for the help

Starboard "Start" for absolute beginner ot starboard "GO" for beginner who wants to advance, both are uphaulable.

starboard GO...(170Lt)

just get a bigger fin to go with it and it can be sailed as a quasi formula board.

mistral prodigy... checkout windsurfing perth.

or another one design...

Formulaboy, Understand what your trying to achieve, but when its all said and done, I spent bloody hours pissing about up-hauling when all I needed was someone to spend 15 minutes showing me how and the techneque to water start. I still sometimes stuggle with it and eventually have to uphaul, but I last longer out there as far as energy goes by getting the waterstarts under way. More time out there, more enjoyment and faster learning skills = more fun.
Reg from Windsurfing Perth put me onto a BIC Techno (152lt)
I have hammered this board something cruel, and its still going strong. And its uphaulable.
And yep probably shade your olman a few years so if I can do it I am sure he will be able to.
Great to see your into something he can do.

Mineral 1, you might not have realised it, but the wind in WA is heaps better for learning to waterstart than in Sydney, and my guess better than Melbourne too! Half your luck. I had to go to Fiji with GoWindsurfing to learn how to waterstart.

I don't know how long it would have taken to learn in Sydney, but after a trip or two to WA as well, they are now natural. Even now, there are some days that there's just not enough wind to waterstart.

FormulaBoy, maybe a formula board is not a bad idea, and probably easier and cheaper to come by than a Go, Start, or a similar board. They don't hold too much value a few years old, so maybe get one and glue a bit of foam to its nose? They aren't bullet proof, but not that delicate... and at least they are lighter to carry!

F/Nova, take him down to Sandy point then

F/B sorry didnt see you where stuck down in Mexico.
Although if the squashed air doesnt improve round here, might as well head North for a while.

Thanx for all the replys well i do suppoze i could give him my f2 fx100 III and i could get a later model or something, Yeah well he used to windsurf i suppoze its a little like riding a bike. We both sail aswell i used to crew for him on our 16ft catamaran (mosquito) this was back when i was a little fella then as i grew up i got heavier and had to shift onto a different boat so i was sailing a tornado with a spinnaker for a while till i got my formula board which is faster again. The main reason that i would like to get him into formula is because that way we will still be able to go out in the light winds instead of having to wait around for the 20knts plus needed for your average windsurfer. Anyway thanks for all the replys

As Gestalt says, he could always get another Wally board; they're still available new and pop out on ebay from time to time. If he's an ex Mossie sailor he may like the social/racing side.

sites.google.com/site/cthom249/

There are a few Prodigies around; they guys who have them like them although to get much speed in lightish winds they need a bigger sail which can be a problem with the wind picks up.

Forgive the ad, I just can't help it.

Getting a Wally is not a silly suggestion. Great numbers both racing and crusing in every age group. Great Nationals every year and a bit of a Retro growth developing in the class also....I was watching the racing in Sydney last march and was blown away with the camaraderie.

Bic Techno 293 (the one with the fin box in the centre that u can mount a fin in to have a daggerboard type effect).

You can learn on it (100kg sailor about max tho') and then leave the centre fin out and plane no problems. A good sailor will almost keep up with the formula boys in 18kn plus.

Even better, hard to bust them, and they've been around long enough a flash one would be $500.
