Hey People

I'm Looking for a new wave sail, I'm thinking around 5.0. I want to start getting into the waves this season. I'm 6'5" 96kg and ride a 2002 Tiga Freemove 63(112ltr) Current Sails are 5.2(Dead) 6.2 and 7.0.
Pretty much after a high wind sail(20-30Kts)But was thinking anything under 5.0m might leave me in the lurch in lulls etc.Whatta yas Reckon
Any Advice appreciated
Cheers

Brett

Cliffo if your talking high winds then a 4.7 is not out of the question, I'm 98 kg and I was just hanging on to my 4.7 at geeries on sunday.

With your 6.2 and 7.0 you probably want to get a quiver with a 5.3 and a 4.7. I can see why a 5.0 will be appealing but as an example Elmo went out with his 5.2 against my better advice and was blown off the water, wished he'd put his 4.5 up.

All things to consider

Dont forget the type of sail. See for me a 5.3 will be my biggest sail ( i weigh 65kg) so i will be looking a powerful sail to get me out on the lighter days. You should look at a not so powerful 5.3 if it is going to be smallest, but i would say buy a 4.7 as well. I bought a 4.2 knowning i wouldn't use it heaps but at geeries on sunday i was glad i spent every dollar on it, there is nothing worse than being way over powered. So you may use a 4.7 a handful of times in summer but you will be glad you bought it

Hardie, a 4.7 would be fine for geeries blowin 35 kts like last sunday
but realisticly, summer seabreezes aren't that strong, and aren't nearly as gusty. At this stage I can really only afford one sail coz i would like a new/near new sail. Reading web sites etc. the new sail designs seem to have a much higher wind range so you can get away with one sail for a greater variety of conditions, so I'm probably leaning more towards a 5.3ish but don't really know what sort/brand of sail to go for, whether it's a more power orientated wave sail or a less powerful one. I Like the sound of '04 NP Search 5.3m.
I see a nice Aerotech Charge 5.5 on the for sale section but think it might be that bit too big.
Maybe I'm just talking Schit

Cliffo last summer, the 4.7 was one of my most used sails, but some of us can only learn through experience so you get what you think is best for you

surf sail has some real good ezzy sails in the 4.7 to 5.3 sails
i reckon get a 5 then when it gets windy and we are out at lanos just downhaul the bitch
but then again a 4.7 would be good too as hardie said after all id listen to hardie first (sorry hardie i dont mean to kiss ass i just believe that 20 years sailing experience is better than 10 months)

I'm pushing 6'4" & 93kg. I used a 4.5 on Sunday at Geeries & was overpowered at times also. I'd go with the 4.7 5.2 option as suggested. The steadier the wind the smaller sail you will get away with. The older NP search's are a very powerful sail more for onshore conditions or someone looking for lots of power.

with a board of 112 litres!!! I reckon if you want to get only one sail a 5.2-5.3 ish will be perfect for summer. If you're planning to use a smaller wave board at some point then smaller sail could be an option.
And you could go for a proper wave sail ( NP Zone for example or any other brand..) these wave sail have a huge wind range nowadays.

enjoy!

hardie just helped me rig my ezzy 5m and im telling you this much stiffy cliffy that yes the wind range is huge
the way it can belly then with fine tuning it flatens out
so maybe a 5.5 or 5.3 would be the go
but then you will need a smaller sail for the honking days
who knows stiffy suckle titties

Thanks Everybody

I think the 4.7 / 5.2 option is the way to go. Hey its only Money
I'll probably go for a new 5.2ish and get a half decent 4.5-4.7 for those odd howler days.
I found that my old 5.2(as trashed as it is), Really let me down in the lulls in anything under 20kts, to the point where i had real problems waterstarting.
Thanks again for the advice
See ya on tha water

I used to have the exact same board, and when I went to buy a 5.0 I was advised it may not have sufficient mastfoot pressure to pin the board on the water with a 112lt board. I didn't understand, but that's exactly what happened, and in pyscho winds the board would bounce around under me uncontrollably - and I'm nearly 10kg heavier than you.

In really strong wind, it's always gusty so I'd go 5.0-5.3 but pick a sail with wide wind range (ie so called "low power") such as Tush Storm or Rock, Ezzy Wave, NP Zone etc so it twists off in gusts. I have 3 Storms (5.0, 5.75, 6.5) and have been very happy with their wind range in particular. They allow me to rig bigger than I should, then reef on the downhaul to depower. If the wind backs off, then I let off some outhaul and away I go again. I'd recommend a 5.25 Storm for that board, and forget the 4.7 till you have a smaller wave board below 100lt.

Yeah thanks grumpy

Thought that might be the case with that board, but won't really be going full on waves this season anyway. I think its a good board to learn in the ocean. mostly jumping and should be ok for the 2 foot snot we call waves in perth. once i get the confidence for bigger waves in 4.5 conditions the a dedicated wave board is definately the answer.
Looking very seriously at an 04 5.2m Ezzy Wave SE this week. only heard good things about these sails, How about you guys out there.
Any opinions Good or Bad

Thanks

Brett

Yeah i have an Ezzy 4.7 from 2001 and find it to be a great sail. For me at 70kg i can sail it from about 12-15 knots and only got blown out of the water a couple of times in the summer seabreezes at Lano. I find it easy to rig and pretty durable (put my first hole in it last weekend at geeries!). I emailed David Ezzy about the changes from 2001-2004 and he said the low end power has been one of the major improvements. Can't give any comments from a heavy weights perspective though, but if you go to the ezzy website you can email Dave himself and he seems pretty keen to help.

I'm with Grumpy on this one Go the Tushingham Storm or the Tushingham Rock (similar cut and feel a bit stronger)the last ezzy(2001) I tried felt like a bag as compared to the Tushingham.
Grumpy and I must have at least 40yrs combined experience.
See my rave review in this post post www.seabreeze.com.au/forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=2311 unfortunately this particular sail would be to big.....Go a 5.0

Ooops I might have been a bit to harsh with the "bag" comment lets say it had a limited wind range and felt a bit unstable when the wind picked up.

Hey just wondering bluejuice with the ezzy you sailed was it the special edition version (6 battens) or just the normal one they had back then. As i said i'm pretty happy with mine and it's the 6 batten version which i find stable, and have compared it to about 5 other brands. Maybe i'll have to try and get a demo of a tushingham.

Cliffo, I'm 98kg and run a 98L on 4.7 up to 6.5 (though the 6.5 is probably pushing upper limits on this board...).

The 6.5 is a Tushy Formula Light cambered (=pr#ck of a thing to rig but super stable!!) This is my 2nd Tushy, I have been really happy with them! The 4.7 is KA Kaos that have been borrowing from Rooster (Lee, Re discussion, are you a Beer or Bourbon man?) KA 4.7 is used for "fully sick" days like last Sunday. It too is a very stable sail!

Drop Rooster a line about the Ezzy's as he has a quiver of them!

In between is a 5.3 KA (after bottom panel replacement and mast top repair, it's still going strong Davo - Thanks heaps!!! ) though I would probably head for 5.4 or 5.5 if I were to replace it. To get a bit of extra range I'm using a 7.4 NP, but now need an old 120L+ board to carry it for those 15-20knot days.

Getting gone!!!

Davo87 back then they had the 5 batten and the special edition I used the 5 batten for a season also tried out the special edition. Try the tush go about .25m bigger than what you think you would normally use.
