Apart from sounding a fifteen year old..."hey homie what' sup?"
I have seen a few articles and pictures on Stand Up Paddle surfing, however I still don' understand the true benefits of the sport over surfing. As I haven't actually seen anyone doing it, nor met anyone who does it, what are the advantages of the sport??
My assumptions are: Advantages - get going on a wave quicker as you are already standing - can sit further out behind the surfers so you get a greater choice of wave - can lean onto the paddle for turning, etc. - more???
Disadvantages - give all the surfers the **s (even more so than the mal riders) because you can "hog" more waves - have a paddle hanging out your hand, getting in the way - have to ride a massive board that would not manoeuvre too quickly - more gear to handle and store - more expensive than a surfboard
Don't want to be the cynic but as yet I have more disadvantages than advantages
Can someone please enlighten me. Would love to try it!!
P.S. What sort of breaks would this style of surfing suit in Perth?
Sure it's not a case of, "If Laird does it, everybody will buy one, lets make some BIG money" Perhaps kiting has lost it's first flush, and something new is needed to keep those pockets emptying.
There was an article on TV about it, people on waves from 1' to 30'. Comment from somebody trying one, was that the board wanted to do it's own thing most of the time. Scott Mckercher was out here a few weeks ago on one. Didn't look very exciting, but it was only waist high.
There is a SUP at windshack available for demo, and Keith Teboul (Quatro's shaper) already made prototypes and soon they'll be in prodution
actually it's lot of fun, waveriding you use the paddle to carve and keep the balance, when there's no waves you can use it to cruise around and stay fit (it looks really easy but it's hard work, good winter training for windsurf) That's true that you can have problem with surfers, but i reckon that if it's good for surfing, the best is to go surfing, if it's bad because of onshore wind, cold weather, not enough swell, waves not powerfull enough or too fast to paddle in (but then you need to be realy good and a bit crazy, like laird hamilton !!)... then it's good for SUP, also you can reach outside reefs much easier
yeh i agree with eric, must be bloody good exercise plus you could go for a ride anyway if the conditions are crap when u get to the beach!! Might try with an old mistral hehe.. Oh yes PLUS!!: being out there longer would get ur skills up and a good tan to make ur missus or "the ladies" happy hahaha!!
Reason you haven't seen anyone do it, is that it is still a Yank phenomenon that has only just made it to the rest or the world (note to Americans: yes there IS a world outside the USA)
Most of them are using the SUP's in areas where it is sh!t to windsurf or surf most of the time eg inland lakes where riding a wave means the boat wakes are peeling in to shore. In that scenario it makes sense. In WA, well I dunno....
I said *most* ppl use them to SUP on flat water and ride small waves in..... that is what they were designed for. and that is why it has taken a long time to catch on elsewhere
Never said it would not get hardcore and thus spread.
I stand by my comment that it makes no sense in big waves or windy areas.... WS or real surfing would surely sh{t all over SUP'ing in places where there is good conditions to be had
