Hey everyone,
I was out on the water over the weekend and caught myself reflecting on how I got hooked on this sport in the first place.
For me, it was that exact moment the board finally planed for the first time—that sudden shift where the drag completely vanishes, the board lifts onto the surface, and you’re just skimming across the water at full speed. Once I felt that weightless surge, I knew there was no going back.
I’m curious to hear how everyone else got into it!
When and where did you first discover windsurfing?[/b]
Are you riding purely for fun/weekend freedom, or do you compete in slalom, wave, or freestyle?[/b]
What’s the single thing you love most about it?[/b] Is it the pure speed, the mental reset from daily life, or just being out in the elements?
Would love to hear your stories and see how long people here have been sailing!

I still remember my first planing runs on my F2 comet.
But nothing beats sailing with your kid!

Its a sad new world we live in.

Yeah probably. But anyway... 1st year uni holidays in 1990. Shared a windsurfer with 4 other mates at Fannie Bay on light off shore trade winds. It was every Saturday and Sunday for 4 weeks. It was a very large sail, and a standard windsurfer board. This gear would spit us off at the sudden change of wind direction. It ended for me when a large box jelly fish swam under my board. I didn't think they were there in July when the water was cool. But, if I had've fallen through it, I doubt I would be here. I tacked back, and that was my lot. Didn't take up windsurfing again until 2008 in a windier city, when I really started it properly.

Robot or not I'll answer.

1984 just started high school and the PE teacher Mr Quarm who lived in the same road sold me his board, I burrowed the money from my mother and did both a paper round and a magazine round, it was a Hiflyn 300 CS with a 6m and 4.5m sails that both set own the same mast, it had a slot in Fin and tie on boom, no harness or lines and the mast foot flew out every now and agin and smacked me in the nuts. Had a hang ten wetsuit. In todays world it would be an awful set up. I didn't plane for over a year but it was great.

I still sail now and have been in and out of the industry for 40 years. Love it.

Well, there goes the Internet. I guess it's back to bank tellers and twisted pair again. There's another bishop on the landing.
