I have just taken up windsurfing in the last year, but have really struggled picking the right days, and the right time to go to the beach to get really consistent wind. I have a house down at Rosebud where I keep my gear, and then head down to Rye primarily.

My question is, around Melbourne, where do people go ( I can get to Williamstown area around to the Mornington Pensinsula), and how do you know which place will have the right conditions on the day. ie. which locations are the best for the different wind directions.

Currently I check the BOM forecast and seabreeze for the wind strength then just head to Rye, but depending on where the wind is blowing it can be average conditions there.

Time after time I will be either the only windsurfer at Rye, or when I turn up, everyone else is leaving, or I get tired early, then everyone else turns up. What does everyone else know that I don't?!?!?

Also, being a beginner, I love going to Rye because you have about 200m of shallow water. Are there any other beaches around Melbourne like that?

struggling to pick the right days for wind?

there's something new.

Mathew I'm sure you're the only windsurfer in australia or even the world, to have that problem.

when you find the right way to pick winds, just let us know and we'll tell you if you were right.

Drive a bit further, and either go to Inverloch or Sandy Point, better winds than the bay, and shallow water inlets

I haven't been to Sandy Point since I first windsurfed as a youngster about 17 years ago. I'd love to go back. Any idea how long the drive would be from the Burwood area? And also for Inverloch? I remember its around 3 hours or so.

Look out for onshore winds- conditions tend to be better if the wind is blowing off water rather than land, although northerlies, even at Rye are usually pretty gusty. Most of the north eastern side of the bay works well in the prevailing wind directions, being anything from southerly to westerly, but there aren't many spots where the water is shallow for a distance like Rye. Wind around the bay can be very locallized so you just have to get to know the patterns with experience.

Saw your last post as I was typing mine. If you're in Burwood, I'd say the best sailing, short of heading to Inverloch or Sandy, would be at the closest beaches to where you live, rather than at Rye. Anywhere between StKilda to Beaumaris is generally onshore and safe but it can be choppy, making it tough for newbys. You could try behing the breakwaters at either Sandringham or StKilda.

Thanks Mikey

The reason for Rye is primarily because a mate and I have houses down there. But from what you are saying, we should probably not bother down there unless we are getting a say a Westerly to a North or North Easterly? Otherwise, we'd be better off heading up to the North East part of the bay to enjoy Southerly winds, or a South Easter you might head to the North West of the bay. I probably sound dumb with this, but it's seriously something I haven't given enough though to in the past.

I heard another option is to head over to Point Leo which is possibly another option for the mornington peninsula if the conditions do not suit Rye?

Someone may beg to differ, but I've rarely found the wind to be very good in Westernport, possibly because its often slightly offshore. But you could give Pt Leo or Flinders (front beach only for beginners) a try. Any wind with some easterly in it tends to be quite flukey in Port Philip Bay. Easterlies are not very common fortunately. Another tip, get to know a "wind tree". Preferably a tall gum tree on a high point that you can use as a wind guage. After a lifetime of careful observation you'll be able to predict the what the wind is probably like on the bay by what the leaves and branches are doing. And if branches are breaking off or the tree has blown down, just pack your smallest gear.

In reply to the Sandy point Distance.

allow 1.5-2hrs from passing the berwick turnoff off the M1 freeway.

Going to the Berwick offramp (2nd berwick T/O) turn right to fiveways and you bypass cranbourne.

Come down between 26th and 30th to Sandy point and say hello.

I am running a kiting Clinic at that time plus have a few 06 kites and 06 KA Sails to demo over the week.
look for the green falcon tonner.

The Accom is all booked but still some space for day trippers.

Unforunately I have no time off over xmas this year so I'll have to do day trips on weekends. I will be trying to get there over Australia Day weekend into the caravan park. Actually, do you know of any free bush camping in the area?

My last time out in some good wind I got my first taste of getting in the harness and into the foot straps and loved it!! I can't wait to get out there again!!

If you hadn't already seen this earthsci.unimelb.edu.au/engage/dynamic-earth-updates/bay-winds
is THE source for gauging the bay conditions. -sorry seabreeze

Personally I feel Rye is fluky unless a northery is hammering in. But will be excellent to get the water starts happening - once you have them under control... Southerlies look to elwood, st kilda or brighton. Northerlies go greens point (end of south rd on beach rd)

I have found from Mornington thru Franga seems to be a hole for wind - ie its usually weak, off shore or doesn't make landfall there...

Final 2cents worth - southerlies are more reliable and can build in the arvo on top of a seabreeze, northerlies will usually be strong until midday and then "usually" die down.

I sail all over Vic, but I'm sure Inverloch is THE place for flat water, slick speed runs, safe inlet sailing and especially surf sailing.
Need more surf sailors down there please!!!; great for novices and experts. The water over the bar (from Ozone St across to Point Smythe) is awesome; smooth smooth smooth smooth water on small rolling swells inside (so much fun esp on SW / W) / powerful surf outside and a hell of a beautiful spot. Any inlet sailors should come out here for a try; may never go back! (don't even have to go near a breaking wave if you don't want).
Awesome scenery 1 hr 40 mins from Burwood (more than worth the extra drive c.f. the bays!!).
Seabreezes not as strong as Northern Port Phillip Bay unfortunately, but any hint of E or SE and it REALLY blows by late afternoon (perfect cross / off).
Winds from E around to W are all fantastic, drive to Woolamai / Venus Bay / Kilcunda? / Cape Paterson 2nd surf (all surf only) on NW.
Take care over the bar on outgoing tide; stay south of the channel off Ozone / towards SLSC if flowing out.
Must be the best place to kite in Vic also!

Awesome work guys!!! This is exactly the information I was after. Much appreciated.

By the sounds of it, Inverloch will be a similar time to travel to as it does for me to get my stuff together to get to Rye. As I've said before I've had one or two good days down there, but it's generally very frustrating. At least now I'll be a bit smarter about when to give it a go there, or not bother and try somewhere else.

Post number 10 in the following link provides a good summary of the weekly summer wind cycle (optimistic version).
