Time for a new ones. I have mainly used Chinook Carbon RDM mediums and always chinook UJs, US pin style. I have snapped a fair few extensions in waves but just put this down to normal behaviour.

But at roughly $230 for an extension and $120 for a UJ I think I should do some sniffing around this time. Probably end up with the same unless there are any other amazing recommendations. The last one was a technolimit which seem fine, except the pin holes have worn to ovals. But that may just be because it hasn't snapped first unlike previous.

Not sure if its fair to comment on actuall shops stuff ??, but in this case I seen surf and sail do their own for 109 extension and 80 UJ. look just like chinooks, are they made by the same group ? Any feedback, or is it a case of you get what you pay for ?

What else have others used?

http://www.boardseekermag.com/equipment_reviews/equipment/mast-extension-test.htm

Mini-test done by a mag recently. They liked the Severne Wave Grenade Extensions.

I use the chinook ally extensions, got no issues! I'm definately a fan of carbon booms, but pretty happy to use ally instead of carbon extensions.

"Streamlined" We use them too, and their 2 bolt "quick lock" deckplates. As close to bulletproof as you can get. surfsail has them in stock.
Bought one after extension failure in the LOC a couple of years ago and that is all we use now.The original Streamlined universal still looks fine even though some big k's have been done on it.

For strength in a UJ, the Chinook europin. There is no other

The cup and pin are machined from one piece of billet alloy (no more snapped pins), the bolts thru are thicker (no more rounded off piddly little allen key or phillips head bolts when changing tendons).

See last thread about cup vs. europin.... or look at a Chinook europin in the flesh and u will see what I mean.

I reckon the Chinook alloy RDM extn is good too, the wall thickness seems better then many. I would not worry about extra weight in an extension as it does not affect swing weight of the rig like a boom or heavy sail does for example, and an extra 100 - 200g over a carbon extn is not felt - having a wee before sailing has greater effect.

Just changed from chinook europin UJ to streamlined - big weight difference. I've never broken a chinook, and never heard of the streamlined breaking.

Extensions either chinook or streamlined.
