Hi all i was wondering if anyone would have any information on getting started in kiteboarding. I was down at Newcastle Beach yesterday in hope i'd catch some action i did and now am more keen then ever before to get it going. Never done it before so am keen to go to a lesson, and am keen to purchase gear straight away. Be great if anyone can help as don't really know how to get it started. Also is there many groups of beginers out there that are happy for an extra. Thanks Amanda

I can help you.....by highly recommending that you take up windsurfing instead.
At the risk of sounding biased....it's a much better sport.

Don't need to provide info. Just go to the beach on a windy day with swell and you'll see.

The proof is in the pudding so they say.

Enjoy

AKG,

Take up windsurfing. I know a few people in Newcastle who took up kitesurfing, and now wish they didn't invest in all that gear cause they realised windsurfing would be a lot more fun, and flexible.
Well maybe one or two people.. but hey, I'm only learning it now so why don't you get some windsurfing gear and we can practice!

Hi all,

Shame the poor guy has now been scared off from the windsurfing section of the site.

I am going to go and ask some advise (in the Kitesurfing section) about where to learn how to windsurf and see what they come back with?

Let the games commence ;)

Cheers

"...windsurfing would be a lot more fun, and flexible."

I respect windsurfers (hell i even started a topic) but how is it more flexible, you cant jump unless your hooning and theres big waves, and what tricks are there besides walking around on the deck...i mean board... sorry about possibly insulting the sport, but i was just wondering how you can justify that statement?

Samio,

With no disrespect intended (and it does sound like you are not very familiar with windsurfing) I can assure you there are more moves in windsurfing (when you combine wave sailing, freestyle, slalom, etc) than kiting. To list them all would crash this website.
This comes from friends who are good at both, and years of my own knowledge.

For a sport that's been on the world stage for over 30 years, do you really think there would be nothing besides "walking around on the deck"? (that's actually a trick I'd like to master)

And again no disrespect intended but whenever I see kiting at the beach, that aint exactly doing much either. Most of them just go out and back, ignore the waves, do the odd jump (sure they get height sometimes but they don't do anything while they're up there), maybe lift their feet in the air. So may I also ask how you justify your view? Anyway they seem to be having fun so good on them. Each to their own.

Hi AKG, if you must take up kiting, GET PROFESSIONAL INSTRUCTION. I can't stress this enough, if you want to live. I'm not kidding, it's the same as hang-gliding and para-gliding. If you are not suicidal, make sure you find a qualified instuctor. Sorry I don't know who they are in your area. If you want to kite safe, it will be about developing good judgement, on conditions and sites. Skills are least important, unless you are just plain reckless.

I have just been watching a windsurfing video with a whole lot of tricks listed (none of which I will ever be capable of performing). They are all numbered and from memory they got up to 350ish. That is quite a number of tricks, even if you divided that by a third to remove the variations.

I will be happy when I can just carve jybe constistantly.

I`d say go back to school, learn to read and when you`re
back enter the kite forum and NOT the windsurf forum.
