Hi,

Whats your fave sail size in various winds?

I Have a quiver of 3 sails:

6.7 gaastra freeride = 13 Knots+
5.7 NP wave = 15 Knots - 20 Knots
4.5 Gaastra ****bag = 20 knots +

Many Thanks

what weight a you becuase i have 2 sails a 6.7 and a 5.5. i need a good constant 15 knots for both sails to get on a plane. it is really ticking me off, i thought with a 6.6 cam sail i would be a on a plane in 12-15 knots i hunting a 7.5 , 8 m sail now. i am amazed at the 09 new sails both sails just about have the same wind range. its just the 6.6 is abit faster in higher wind built more for speed .

dam wish i brought a 7.5 or a 8m dam

6.5 15-25 knots
5.4 15-25 knots

6.6 KA Koyote - 15-20 kts
6.6 KA Koyote - 20-25 kts
6.6 KA Koyote - 25-30 kts.

Having only one sail really sucks in the 30kt'ers!

The sweetest spot is around 22-26 kts.

North Warp 7.8 = 8 to 18
Neil Pryde RS6 7.2 = 12 to 20
Neil Pryde RX2 6.6 = 15 to 23
Neil Pryde VX2 5.9 = 20 to 30
Neil Pryde VX 5.2 = 25 to 35
Sailworks Revo 2 5.0 = 18 to 25
Sailworks Revo 2 4.4 = 30 to 40

These estimated wind ranges depend on the water state and how steady the wind is.

If funds permit this range will probably be rationalised and replaced with around four sails of 7.5, 6.5, 5.5 and 4.5 sizes.

Severne Overdrive 8.5 13-18k
Severne Overdrive 7.5 15-20k
Severne Overdrive 6.5 18-23k
Severne Overdrive 5.5 21-26k

I think I'm at the lower end of the wind scale for these sails

Well, 30 kts according to seabreeze. The same day I went out with the 6.6 another guy posted on here about snapping his mast over near the airport runway and having to get towed back in. I only stayed out for 45 minutes because it was too difficult to waterstart in the wind.

i believe you crazyjockey.

i got ridiculed on here last year for suggesting i used a 5.3 KA kult in 35-40 knots.

last weekend i used said sail in 35 knots bump and jump.

they're great sails with a huge range.

I must be a pooossy!!

I was out today on my 4.7 ****box and was catapulted during mack 10 speed at least 5 times in 25 - Gusting 27 (seabreeze speed)

Although I'm sure there were a couple of 35+ gusts coming off the point!!

I dont know how you could hold down a 5.3 in 35 knots!!

REEESPECT !!

well i would have prederred a 4.7 that's for sure. but like crazyjockey i don't own one.

the problem i had was with the board, 90lt wide bodied wave board was all over the place. i am certain a narrow wave board would have sorted that out.

i wasn't the only one on biggish gear though.

Vando was on his 5.2 Loft lip wave and 80lt acid. he didn't seem to be having any issues at all.

wind speeds were confirmed on the beach with a meter and crossed referenced on bom sites.

I was planning on buying a 5.3 Kult as my next sail, for use when the wind is high 20's plus. The fact that you have used it in 35+ wind confirms my choice

The 6.6 was a handful trying to waterstart and going upwind was very difficult (the sail was so back-hand heavy during the gusts that I had to push forward with my front hand and pull in with my back hand to prevent the sail totally sheeting out), but on a broad reach it was feeling pretty nice, and I swear I have never been that fast before!

My fave sail size is 4.7 in about 25kts.

I come to this conclusion because it's a small enough sail that it whips around super quick on all the tricks and makes looping etc that much more fun. Once you get to 4.2 weather it's getting a bit radical. Windage on the board comes into play bigtime and everything is a bit more 'twitchy'. 5.2 is the opposite, the rotations etc are just that touch slower and you have a bit more rig to move around etc. 4.7 for the win :D

nice. it should do the job. the 430 is not the specified mast but i use my 5.3 on a 430 with no adverse effects. especially in the higher winds. using a stiffer mast can help.

yestereday i picked up a 4.7 which i'll also be trying on the 430, fingers crossed it works.

as cjw points out. it's the other way in the surf. go as small as you can.
