Latest News..

Hi Everyone,

The second WindWanderers BBQ has been finalised, the votes counted and the lucky winner is the Train on the Gold Coast. The date is set for Saturday the 3rd of June from 1pm onwards. All aboard for a day full of street drags and fun. There will also be a club GPS for anyone to check their speed with. plus the day will include the much loved gearswaps...

The Train is a great flat water location for sailors from beginners to advanced speedsters. There are multiple playgrounds for the kids, BBQ, toilets and dogs are allowed. At high tide the launch spot has plenty of sand and deep water. The locals have also installed a wind vane on a post so we can all see what the direction is. There is also plenty of shade under the trees on the beach edge. But as the council sign reads, no golf allowed..

The Meet will be sponsored by Windsurfingsales and Ozwindsurf. There will be the usual bbq and a "give away".

Ozwindsurf E-Zine are supplying the BBQ and will attend as well. Much respect to the guys who have taken the time to get involved. We are all very lucky to have a zine in our own backyards. Check out the site at www.ozwindsurf.com.au/
Please note that they are also providing coverage in there weekly news section.

Windsurfingsales have donated a Gun Sails mast bag for one lucky member of the WindWanderers. This is a very nice piece of kit that will hold up to 3 masts in 6 different compartments with a 5mm external padding. Each compartment is specially lined for the protection of carbon masts.
Check out http://www.windsurfingsales.com.au/products/bags/ for more details.
All members must get a free raffle ticket from me during sign on and the draw will be held during the bbq. Best of luck to all. Windsurfing sales have also donated some flags for the day and some literature for the members packs. Thanks to Bud and the gang for all of their help.

The bbq will now be an ongoing event throughout the day. So everyone can have sausages before and after the session. Everyone is welcome.

The Train can be found off the North Street / Gold Coast Highway intersection at Southport. It has small car park and big rigging area. Maybe try to get there a little earlier to ensure parking.

Other News..

New locations added:-

1. Kirra, gold coast
2. Bells Beach, Redcliffe
3. Bribie Island
4. Bullcock Beach
5. Mooloolabah
6. Lake Catharahbah (xmas)
7. Elliot Heads (easter)
8. Hamilton Island.

Registering the club :-

I am currently looking into registering WindWanderers as an incorporated club. This will help to protect the club and give the club the ability to buy equipment for all to use. We need a total of 3 more people besides myself to get involved. If anyone is interested then please let me know.

Insurance:-

I have approached windsurfing Queensland with regard insurance for those that indicated there interest. I am awaiting the WQ agm to take this further.

Club Webpage:-

The club web page is underway. If anyone would like to contribute ideas or content than let me know and I'll incorporate you ideas.

The Next meet:-

I am planning the following meet to be on the sunshine coast at Caloundra. The event will be a wave session. Those members that desire the flat stuff haven't been left out because golden beach and bullcock beach have plenty of flat as well. The bbq will also incorporate an NXS demo day. I will also give any beginner lessons to anyone that is keen to try out the sport wind permitting..

Remember... the road travelled is more important than the destination reached.

Regards
Gestalt.

Me too, that is the first wkend I am totally free (4 more assignments to complete before then). But a guy from Newcastle just bought a formula board and I may have to take it down to him, unless anyone heading there b4 then? I have never been to Lake Macquarie, heard its awesome to sail on. Has anyone been? Might be an excuse for a weekend on the lake!

Good on ya Gestalt,

Difficult to get all of us mob to agree on anything, let alone where to sail on a particular day.
Bit like herding cats really.

Good to see that snags can be had at the end of the day, nothing like a feed (and a frothy sherbet)
after a good day's sailing

Note with the train, parking is severely limited, so if you're not bringing a board then then there's another parking spot about 50m south of the rigging area, it's usually pretty empty. Even if you are bringing gear you can lug it from that other carpark if you're desperate (and all the spots are taken). People sometimes park on the grass but I hear that the local boys in blue take a dim view of this.

I just hope the wind is right, these Autumn doldrums suck...

If i's not true SE or NNW to NE, the Train is absolutley useless for sailing. If it happens to look remotely westish, would you consider moving the meet to wello? Wello meets from end of April till mid August are probably safest. There really isn't any spot on the goldcoast that is sailable in a westerlyish direction, except for Kirra on a Northwest, and even then it would probably exclude half the sailing population because it is waves (but generally still safe-ish) There's nothing down here that compares to wello during winter.

However, we had awesome winter direct southerlies at shearwater last year. They were as strong or stronger than our summer winds and blew for much of the day. Hopefully we will get some more of those this year

I agree with Haircut. Any wind with west in it is no good here on the Goldie. and it looks as if the wind will be out of the south-west to west this weekend. Perhaps we can shift to Wello at this late stage?

hi haircut...

i'm open to a move. we will need to see what everyone else thinks..
i'm all for the best spots possible. if everyone else is keen to change locations then send me an email or hit this forum.

i agree wello is the best in a westerly, there is also redcliffe that will work in a westerly. i was thinking when i calc the date that we would be getting the last of the SE....

happy sailing gestalt...

With the forecast so unreliable at the moment maybe we could make the final call Friday night or Sat early
I suggest leave it to 1 or 2 people (probably Gestalt + 1) who know the areas and no regrets

I know you are putting alot of time into organising this stuff Gestalt, so i don't want to mess things up. I just think that if people are are intending to sail at the meet, the train will be very disappointing if not unsailable. Even if we went over to seaworld side, it is still like trying to sail in a puddle in the middle of a city - 15 seconds of 25knots followed by half an hour of 0knots. It's consistency on any direction with west in it is nothing like wello

hi guys,

We now have a website. the link is www.windwanderers.com

it is still very preliminary as i am not a web guru. i will expand things over the next few weeks. the website is not a forum, just somewhere to let everyone know what is going on and who is supporting us.

it will also include some links on sailing locations. (if anyone wants to write something about their fav spot please do.)

it will have photo galleries of the meets, links to weather sites... being seabreeze of course... and some tips on technique etc...

let me know if it works.

happy 30+ knots

this is a site i started working on 2 years ago but never got around to doing anything with it. I haven't been with iprimus for over two years, yet the webpage is still going

home.iprimus.com.au/the_vegemite_kid/CECW/main/main.htm

if u look in the photos and videos section there are some shots i took from standing in the water at the sandbar. Some came out really well.

The Club is currently looking towards moving the Gold Coast meet to Wellington point due to the saturday forecast of 20-30 knots SouthWest.

Wellington point is a far superior sailing venue in the predicted direction. The plan at the moment is to leave the final decision until Friday night once a more accurate indication of the wind can be obtained. Wellington point is about the only location in SE Qld that will work during a SW-W wind direction. I will send out an email and post a message on seabreeze so that everyone can keep informed. Could everyone please let everyone else no and so on. Word of mouth is a great thing…

The day will still be definitely on, on Saturday, it is only the venue that may change. All of the planned activities will also still go ahead. The BBQ, The Gearswap, The Club Gps etc…

I feel it is important to try to the best of my ability to ensure that there is enough wind at each event to allow all members to enjoy the day. The more wind the better. I know that this possible location change may cause inconvenience for some people and I apologise if this is the case.

Hi KA43

Yes the really flat water shots are during SE winds. The water gets down to about 19-20 degrees in mid winter. The air temp during during the day with southerlies in winter are anything from 19 to 25 degrees, northerlies are consistently warmer still around 23-25 but usually weak until late july.

Thanks Haircut. Sometimes we get up there during scool hols and Ive been promising to drop in on Greeny. Thats positively balmy compared to Sydney. especially the water temp.
Then again Ill still put up with 3 weeks on Maui in a months time [}:)]
