Just wondering if anyone had any info on sailing the Abrolhos islands. I know very little about these islands so any advice would be appreciated. We are considering travelling by air and thus will be limited to the three Islands with runways. Is there any good sailing spots with beach access on one of the islands with a runway. I am bit worried that worried the islands in pictures look like you would have to get out over some very shallow coral reefs. The pictures I have viewed on the net look like there would be some great spots but it would require you to rig from a boat. Is it possible sail directly from the beach with in walking distance of the runway? Which islands?

Cheers

I've sailed at East Wallabi island which has a runway. North side has long sandy beach but SW seabreeze blows offshore there. Might work in an easterly. SE side is probably better for summer sea breeze direction but from memory has very rocky/reef shoreline. If it's waves you're looking for try the southern group.
Google Earth doesn't seem to have good coverage.

Forget the plane and get a boat.

You really need to get a boat organised if you want to windsurf out there. The Geraldton windsurfing club had some unreal trips to the islands on the island leader (cray carrier boat) . Epic waves ,warm water and flat water blasting.

It kinda remote and i would not sail out there unless you got all bases covered .ie safety wise. currents ,tides and shallow sections that can take you by suprise and trap u.

I remember SAILING THERE AND TOOK THE GEAR having to body drad about 200m through that white horn coral.

Far out its windy AND JUSTS dosnt let up night and day with a basic summer system.if theres any wind on the coast line look it will bwe howling . wave sailing or blasting around its always glassy smooth but
Im not sure if a boats has been arranged this year, i will ask.
A lot of the crew have got there own boats these days , but even that is full of hazzards,

The plane flights are unreal but u really only get to stretch the legs an a quick dip , unless you got accom sorted and mates with boats there.

Unreal from the air.

I would be keen if it wasnt too expensive. Would be sweet to do some spearing there as well. I wouldnt bother going if it was mid summer though, there is enough wind on the mainland.
