it would be great to teach windsurfing but it seems that there is no way for any australians to become a qualified instructor unless you go to another state, because you need first of all a boat licence which you cant get in w.a , the only course you can do here is to be a level 1 which is as useful as a $%# hole on the end of your elbow .
if you what to pursue your level 2 and up wards that will never happen in this state as there is only two windsurfing schools of which you are one and as simom has clearly stated that there is an age "requirement " on instructors it seems that you can have to much experience for his liking .
the last resort is to go flying fish and spend up big $$$$ but then you will have to go to east coast or the u.k. to obtain qualifications .
i would like to see you prove me wrong and give some of the keen aussies out there a go !!!!!
have a nice day

Hi mike,
to be an YA instructor, you need to attend the course, and have your powerboat certificate , plus Senior First Aid. There is no limit on age. The age issue only arose as we were looking for a non qualified grommit to help out at weekends(a teenager ) who helps in return for free tuition and kit hire, with mimimal wages. Last time i checked you did not fit this bill, but I would have had no problem with your age for working as a qualified coach (if you were willing to do the course).
The other option is to go to Sydney to do the qualifications, but there would be no difference apart from a NSW Boat Licence, which only qualifies you to use a boat in NSW .

We will not be running any intructor courses till next summer at the earliest, but once qualified, any age instructor is welcome to apply.

Finally Mike, you are one of the only Australians to apply for a job as a windsurf instructor with GWS, but i could not consider you, as you were not qualified.

Simon

Ahh, it's not too bad. Went to the indoor windsurfing last week.Watched a french kid pull a double loop off the ramp. As for the weather, I'm off to Egypt next week to work so not too bothered.

Anyway, Kaos, if you did not want a job, what is the issue with the age? Never quite got that one.

I have obtained my instructors certifitate 1 year ago and as of yet have not found employment due to the fact that there are not enough schools around who are interested to give locals ago. They only want to employe overseas instructors with higher degrees of teaching, of which you are unable to obtain here in ausralia unless you are working for a school . In other words its a loose , loose position if you are from around here. I agree with kaos surport and encourge the local people

could this be that:
- it's easier to employ foreigners and pay them peanuts
- better not have too many instructors in the area..they may create new schools

Hi guys, Phil from Go Windsurfing here, you will not require a boat licence, if the state you are working in does not need/have them, but we will train you how to use the boat.
I would just love to employ more locals, I have six full time aussies working for me (not including the grommets), in either safety bay or lancelin, I pay $25 per hour (foreigners or local) on a casual rate (the foreigners pay 30% tax), be it for windsurf, kitesurf or surf instructors, and a good weekly wage if you fit in with the team, all staff must be qualified, be it surfing aust for the surf team, IKO for the kiters, YA, RYA or whatever for the windsurfers, F class and light rigid licences for the drivers, level 1 YA would be just great, if I could actually find anybody, under 65 preferably.
We are unable to do our own courses this summer as Simon is in the UK, if anybody knows of a level 1 YA course coming up in Perth please let me know.
Believe me, having to many instructors will not create new schools, very unfortunately for the sport it is all about the licences and what the local councils will let you do, come and have a beer with me some time for some great stories!!!
As for higher levels, it probably will always be the case unfortunately that you have to go overseas the RYA system is light years ahead of the local stuff and won't change unless somebody over here starts doing something about it and puts the huge resources in that RYA have, but the RYA has already told Simon that they deal with Flying Fish and UKSA, seems a bit rough it is our country after all, but hey from their perspective there is nothing stopping any local organisation doing their own thing, we have the best surf courses in the world (surfing aust) and having Darren Marshall (IKO) in Perth is a real bonus, no point complaining or waiting for some watery tart to throw a sword at you as the basis for supreme executive power.
So why are you still reading this? My private number is 0428 WA SURF, must be a hard worker.

thanks Phil for these details.
when I was talking about pay I wasn't necessarily thinking of you guys (as I didn't know how much you pay) but more at another school that I remember few years back was paying foreigners something a lot less.
new school was a guess (after bored windsurfer chats on the beach)

goodluck with finding someone soon
