My missus has been trying her darnedest to find a windsurfing magazine (any ****ing windsurfing magazine) that will send the subscription to Oz. I've worked on and been a major player in publishing (writing/photographing) downhill/longboard skateboarding in Australia... similarly to windsurfing, downhill skating is massive in Europe, but struggling here. Is there any validity in a new sailing mag start up here? If you're interested in my work, check my website: www.pixelpimp.com.au

Windsurf magazine posts to Australia and the price is quite reasonable compared to Newagent prices.

considering that Boards UK mag stopped doing monthly publications as too limited profit and number of USA publications has slipped in recent years I would say internet mags with video etc are the way to go. I do buy the boards annual and Windsurf mag to support the windsurf industry but I only buy boards for that reason as i don't find it a great read anymore.

Yeh windsurf mags are fading unfortunately. Was nuts, even over in Maui there wasn't a single wsurf mag in any of the windsurf shops we went in and they didn't even know if there was still a US mag available - just sup n kite ones
Have had thoughts of doing a (online) wsurf mag meself at times - more focused on the NZ/OZ scene...but would need a few recruits to get the material rolling nicely

Having being out of windsurfing for a while and just recently getting back into it, I was thinking earlier this week when i was in the news agency looking at bike and sailing mags, i haven't noticed any windsurfing magazines in there for a while. I can vaguely remember one but it only covered wave sailing from what i can remember. I prefer to look at a magazine than a computer screen. I think a good magazine could help the sport. A modern mag that covers all the different disciplines like wave sailing, racing, GPS speed sailing, free ride and a how to section with gear reviews would be great.

My local newsagent still stock windsurf mags, guess I am lucky!!!
I will never understand e-mags.
Too slow to flick thru looking for an item of interest........... instead u zoom and scroll up n down left n right 5x to just perform a cursory scan of a page.
Bollocks, give me a real mag any day.

If you spend a lot of time on computers for work, Paper Magazines are gold, can take em out on the sun, spill beer, coffee what ever on them, pass them on to friends etc, starring at screens for ages does my head in.

If 'e' mags were all the rage then why do they keep selling all those trashy women's mags etc at the coles check out?

I do a bit of both, it easy to download the latest boards or whatever, but its crappy to read on the screen, just not the same.

Go for it, do both, and dare I say it..cover Windsurfing, Supping and Kiting all in one and you probably have a good business case that would work, getting enough content that just wasn't marketing stuff, would be the hard part, maybe 4-6 per yea

I used to love reading 'freesail', Sign me up for a subscription!

e mags are not inherently better than printed magazines, its just that it costs a lot less to put an e mag out there. Perhaps a compromise is printing out an e mag on glossy paper with a decent laser colour printer (preferably someone else's)? I contributed a bit to the OZ Windsurf e mag and it was fun.

I think the Seabreeze forums and web forums on specific topics in general have taken over much of the market from specialist magazines, ie providing reading material about an area of interest.

If you can read German you can look into "Surf Magazin". They recently launched a digital version which is essentially a copy of their print mag and available to buy in Australia though iTunes. Not sure if they have an Android version.

As for starting a windsurf magazine in Australia good luck with that. I don't think there is a big enough market these days. Buying quality photos and articles costs money and most of them are already covered in the European mags. I know the German mag makes most of their money from advertising. Their subscription base is in the thousands. So you get ok advertising dollars.
