At the moment they think it was a heart attack...

I heard this news yesterday afternoon, very sad to hear. He was a regular along the middle wall at Yamba, and has been sailing there as long as I can remember.

I got there after 5:30 that afternoon. One of the other windsurfers came in, and said someone was in trouble then went back out. I was severely underpowered and i'm still a nub so i wasn't sailing in the middle of the river where the incident happened. Really put a dampener on the rest of the evening.

I heard later that the guy had a tumble and then a heart attack.

Condolences to his wife and family.

This is very sad indeed.

I sailed with the gentleman and his partner just 2 weeks ago whilst on vaction. He was very freindly and very welcoming to a tourist like me, spending time to breif me on the local conditions and just chat in general, like all Yamba area sailors.
I hope his partner continues to sail - I'm sure he would like that. But he did passaway doing something he loved - not many of us will be graced with that.

Very sad

But on the brighter side at least he was doing something he certainly loved at the time of his passing.

condolences to wife and family

yes. Condolences to the family & those who sailed & chatted with him.

I have spent many hours, of many days, windsurfing behind Middle Wall on the Clarence at Yamba.

It is truly a magical spot - and as Ducati & DavMen said, he was doing something he loved - clean ocean water, sunny, NE coming over the wall, flat water, occasional sail with dolphins & a beer to finish.

Heart attack, poor bugger. I guess with the general aging demographic of windsurfing, that this will be more common.

Makes you wonder what the general rate of atrition is for windsurfers. I suspect its a very safe sport. I would expect the death rate to be somewhat less than the average for the whole population. I also wonder how kiting compares. For a while it had a reputation for being particularly dangerous. I wonder whether it has got any safer.

Didn’t comment for a start with this as the scenario was a bit close to home for me re possible reason for demise.
However, if it only prevents one of us following the same path, a few things I can recommend.
Once we go into the 30-40 bracket, the body stops producing a lot of good bits that keeps us healthy. (obviously back when we chased dinosaurs, when we reach this point, the young guns took over and we sat back and just bludged and feasted on their kills)
1 Get cloistral check, if its good, your doing well, if its borderline, then plenty of medication to get it back on track.
2 Have your medico set up a stress test, not definitive, but its better than coming unstuck. Its like a over temp warning on your car, it gives you a warning. You have to make the fix.
Some may not want to go down this road, but for goodness sakes, just do it for those around you. Its not cool to suffer and go this way.
If your over 40 its strongly recomended, if your over 50 its a "must"

Condolences to his family and friends.
