Just wondering if there are any good windsurfing spots in Nth Qld (from Cairns to McKay).

I'm planing a holiday, in July to this region and was wondering what the breeze is like at this time of year, and also where to go?

I have a slalom board, and would prefere flat water and nice 15kn

thanks...

The above is a link to the BOM "wind across australia" wind roses. July looks is pretty promising up there.
Sorry, cant help with the spots though.

well if flat water and 15 knots is what you like then you are in luck. it
flat everywhere up north cause it's protected by the barrier reef.
and 15 knots is common.
spots just look at the map and where see a road to water that is the spot it's pretty safe everywhere so you can just go where ever

We get plenty of 15 to 25 days, mainly SE. You will need to watch the tides pretty closely though as 5 metre tides can leave you walking a kilometre or two through soggy sand. Stingers not really active over winter but a stinger suit still advised as stingers can't read signs.

hey Mackay, where do you sail? I've been living in Mackay for the last 6 months but haven't had a decent sail yet cos my gear is too small. Just got some new stuff though (so it won't be windy for a while now, sorry ) I've been to the harbour a few times when it's been 15-20 (to pray for 20-25) but rarely see any sails and it's all kites north from there.

Hey Jarrod, normally, we sail Saturdays off Far Beach / Illawong Resort at the City Beach Volleyball courts. On good days there will be 10 to 15 sailors having a blast here either side of high tide. Like you said, not all days are great for sailing so some of the guys are rigging up to 12.5 with formula boards. Often we go to Bucasia Beach for something different. Most Sundays if its above 10 knots I take the kids up to Kinchant Dam for a play. They are all just starting out. This w/e is forcast Saturday: SW/S winds 15/20 knots easing to 10/15 knots in the afternoon. Tide is low at 11am at 1.79m and a high of 3.68 at 5pm. This is not so low so if wind is up we will sail the tide in after lunch, if not so much wind it will be about 3pm 'cause the formula guys need the water for the fins.

Hey Tim, cool I'll come down there in the future. 12.5, OMG!! The bigger stuff I was talking about is a 100L board and a 6m sail LOL. Been sailing for 20 years and never had bigger than a 5.2
Does that beach pick up more wind? Wouldn't have to worry about fins at any of the northern beaches.
