Yeah definitely anything on your head, as I said even a helmet is noticeable for keeping u warm, but a neoprene balaclava thing will make a massive diff
And apart from keeping your bonce warm, it will help protect your hearing in later life. Surfer's Ear might sound like a badge of honour, but I can tell you, it's a P.I.T.A. Basically your body protects itself against the cold by closing off the ear canal(s) with bony growths. The surgeons don't want to touch it as it's quite risky surgery. The solution is to get people to yell at you louder, turn up the stereo and repeat "what was that ya said, sonny?".
My problem has probably been caused more from cycling throughout winter rather than getting 5 winter sessions on the water each week, but keeping the earholes warm on the water does more than protect against brain-freeze.
