Just checking if anyones got a X3 boom that has the plastic around the clamp cracked or on the head .Mine has got a lot of cracks but it's not in the boom alloy itself i think.

nooooo...it's just your imagination

the cracks seem to develop after just a week of use but they'll continue working fine for many months after that. if you bought it from that wonderful windsurfing shop on ferry road in southport, i'm sure they'll fix you up when it finally does bust

Yeah i'm pretty sure its all ok and i did run it by the guys on ferry road as well, as usual they looked after me in regards to it but just wanting to know of any others had similar trouble, its only just over 1 year old and i have never had it with any other booms before.

Scared me a bit last Saturday at the Shearwater when i discovered it thats all !

ps - i think i have almost mastered the catapult now Haircut, you need to get that on youtube

cheers

yep, they do eventually break at the head and probably earlier than some of the others but they stay very rigid right up till the point that they do break, unlike many of the other cheap alloy ones like the north that becomes sloppy at the head very quickly if used for more than just back-and-forthing. Like the X3 the X6 breaks the same way at the head.

When it does bust and is replaced, try and hang onto the grey end clips that lock the tail into place, as these seem to split. At least u will have some spare.

At the train there is a boom straightening device built into the kids play equipment near the BBQ. Zoran and DaVecta can show u how to use it

Fook n 'ell. I have had a Chinook ally boom for 4 yrs (1) in a DTL wave spot that I get trashed at often (2) i am 90kg and like to sail overpowered.
You could not tell the boom from a new one apart from the obvious wear on the grip. Still the same bit of inhaul rope IIRC.

If it is sort of known / accepted that cracks develop in a boom WTF are ppl thinking buying them? Even if those cracks don't cause the boom to break it is still unacceptable from my point of view.

Sorry I know I'll get criticised (again) but NP is crap. Since I was criticised for offering that opinion here, all these little posts keep cropping up about all the things that bust on their gear. Interesting....how much is RRP for an X3 and and X6 boom?

i think the plastic is quite stiff and doesn't allow for the flex of the alloy, but the cracks aren't detrimental.

I think NP is going for turnover, but got to hand it to them for being very easy to deal with when stuff busts and getting a replacement on the spot if it is in stock, which booms tend to be. Having the guys at our local shop being very helpful makes life alot easier too

Apparently it has to do with the way that NP cold mould the plastic to the outside of the booms. I have had a bad history with booms ( broken 2 in 2 years one HPL and one Gastly Gastra) so to my X3 back the moment I saw the cracks. They called NP and were told it is structurally nothing. Just the plastic. I have used it since with no signs of further cracking. I did make sure they write down my details though so if it breaks at that exact spot in 1 month out of warranty I can still say but I told you so...

I have an x3 and it had the same cracks. I took it back and it was replaced no questions. But did get the same response that it is not load bearing. if you have a close look you can see it is from the head pivoting and the bit that cracks is like a bump stop, not part of the head.I broke my carbon boom and the x3 replaced it,i can feel no difference.Being an ally boom tho i will replace it every season due to stress corrosion etc.. I,ve learnt the hard way

Yes I agree... never busted one but as I said in my other thread... preventative maintenance!! so have one on order now. Especially as I'm moving to Leeman so a break about 1km offshore is not where you wanna bust stuff too regularly!!!

Add the X3 booms to the recalled bases and the huge breakage rate on the X9 masts and you get a pretty good picture of Neil Prydes quality.
Try a brand that sells high quality, not high quantity.

Good luck with that... it is true but I got sick of the flames when I disrespected Neil

Yeah, fair enough.
I removed my post... I should've suggested what I have found to be a good product and let people make their own mistakes with not so good products.

If you haven't got anything nice to say then don't say anything at all... right!

mention NP and everyone goes off.
you buy whats good and what you find to be good is what i think. if you buy the cheapest product of the line (X3) expect a pile of sh1t.

generally you get what you pay for.

I believe i have earned the right to talk about booms and masts, i have probably kept a couple of people employed over the years to keep up with the breakages. It is true that the x3 cracks are cosmetic, i have had one for several months and it hasnt got worse, however its a 160cm so we havent had many small sail days. The shop gave me $100 credit to shut me up and i was happy with that.(its crap when you dont have faith in your booms strenght)It is true Pryde have had a bad run, dodgy batons, dodgy masts, dodgy booms not to mention months of delays, thats why many of the guys switched to North and Naish and a few went to Ezzy, Pryde have a lot to achieve in the next few years to win back their market share, from what i have heard they are testing like crazy to get it right!

I've had my x3 for 2 season's, I reckon the stiffnes of the boom is unmatched in cheapies... Sure it crack's a bit, I can't even remember when it got the crack's arround the head - probably soon after I started using it?? the clip's at the back are all chipped & split as well... they all still work. later in the season last year the boom arm split in half... in the straight section. being late in the season & not wanting to pay for a new boom I bashed a 25mm dowel into it & held it with some self tapping screw's! it's still quite rigid & held together for at least another 20 sessions.
This season I'll be getting another x3 it's a great boom, but like all alloy's it'll need to be replaced regularly. If it lasts 2 seasons it'll be retired regardles!
