G'day all,
I'm only fairly new to this fantastic sport and am after a little advice. I've outgrown my old cheapie mistral onedesign and am looking to upgrade, smaller board, faster sail, get off the lake and into the surf, that type of thing. Looking to spend about $800-$1000 for a complete second hand rig, with extra sails and the like. I weigh 75 Kg, would a bombora 284 be suitable? i saw one in the paper for sale?? Any help greatly appreciated.

Cheers.

Welcome aboard Jonesy! Most Bombora boards are well over 5 years old and technology has come a long way since then. You will learn the difference as you go. Try and get something later than 1998, which may be cheaper with a few dings, repairs or scratches (you will add plenty of these yourself). There are some decent rigs out there for that price break (don't forget to aim higher, say $1000-1200, and haggle with cold hard cash as most crew are pretty keen to shift their gear!) but there are also some real dog set-ups for the same money. A two piece mast is a must, better if it is carbon as is lighter (some would say a must). Clip on boom is a must! Extension mast base is a good idea, making sure the mast foot is in good graft! You should only need two to three sails (in my opinion) between 4.0m & 5.8m .
The shops have heaps of trade-in gear this time of year and some really great advice!! You can pick up Sails & Booms there between $150-$250 each. They may even throw in a cheap 2nd hand mast (though can be hard to come by this time of year). New mast base and extension from $160 (cash, remember cash!!!). Add all this to your 100L + board and off you go!
Feel free to drop me a line on [email protected] if you need any on-the-spot thoughts. This is just my advice and there are many (albeit silent) more qualified readers of these pages.
Regards,
Kecks!!!

Can anyone help with the volume calculation?

How do you calculate the required volume against the height/weight.
What sort of "freestyle" volume should I look for being 193cm/100kg?

I've seen the fin calculator site. Is there an equivalent for the board calculation?

Obelix
