ive broken 2 masts this year both cam sails and both times while rigged on the grassed rigging area, both were 100% skinny's and the same brand, the sails were n/p 4.6rs 400 mast and a 6.2rs 430 , i'm wondering if the race sails have too much pressure for the skinnies, and is there anyone out there useing skinnies on there race sails

Hi Keef i use RDM masts in my Loft Blades for over 2 years now with no problems the sails are designed around the RDM's,surprised that you have broken 2 RDM's was there any cam wear into the mast? and where abouts did they break up in the top half?

choco the 430 broke twice first time was just above the boom then after repairing it was 1800 from the bottom, the top section on the 400 broke 500 from the join im sure it was leaveing the sail rigged in the sun

What type of cams do you have in your sails the original NP or did you replace them with RDM cams?
Leaving the sails in the sun might be a problem but i've had my sails sitting in temps of around 45 deg although only for a few hours and not all day.

100% race masts (SDM) break commonly, but quality RDMS seem almost unbreakable.

Were they secondhand so you don't know their history? Could have been dropped and therefore weakened - doesn't take much to fracture carbon.

What brand?

the cams are the standard big rs 2008, there great and fit the skinny masts like a glove, i have a KA concept 5/0 with two mini cams and I use a fat gasstra cam just above the boom,
the masts were brought from new but as mark says it only takes a bump and its a fracture
what i have noticed is the sail cloth they use in the n/p,KA concepts , and i think the loft blades holds the heat and maybe attract the heat on the beach maybe because they dont hold any water

Sorry forgot to asko too - how old?

KA masts in KA sails, even if out of warranty you can claim form the manufacturer as thye didn't last as long as a reasonable person woudl expect the average mast to last --------- if they haven't been dropped or abused

they were about 2 or 3 seasons old, maybe take into concideration the rs 4/6 is supposed to be ridded on a 370 mast so there's a s..t load of pressure on the 400 mast, mark ill keep that in mind about the KA warranty

Hi Keef,
Black luff pockets left in the sun will kill a mast. Anything over 80 degrees C and epoxy will start to break down.

Ok rigging a 400 mast in a sails made for a 370 means the boom might be too far up the mast. Also the mast being too stiff and/or opposite bend curve might not help.

tim the luff isnt black , its a light colored stiff plastic and it does get hot
, not like the normal dacron when its wet its cool
gybesports i have made a turbon and there is negative mast extention , but you are rite the mast is stiff, i hope this new mast doesnt break otherwise ill be looking for a KA with a lifetime warranty
