Just wondering if anyone knows of a good knee brace that can be used for sailboarding. I popped my med. ligament (partial tear) for the second time this year and don't want to spend the next 2 months watching others having fun from the seashore.

Did the same last year and after healing time decided that a small hinged brace ( wetsuit material, velcro, hinged alum support ) would not only give good support for the knee but also good mental support for peace-of-mind. I bought it for about $80-90 ( I think ) from a orthopedic shop in Myaree - a couple of shops up from WSP.
Reg from WSP knows the place if you can't find it.
Best thing since sliced bread for the knee and mind.

Depending on how severe your ligament sprain is the medial will repair to a degree and with some exercise your leg will be as good as new. For a list of braces, well there are a number and i would consult a good physio on which way to go. The problem is that metal the hinged braces (which provide the best medial support) are not made from materials designed for salt water environment and they will deteriorate.

I know guys that have had full thickness tears of the med ligament go back to AFL and severe contact sports. So make sure that you rehab your knne properly and you should be right. As a ball park a meium severity sprain of the Med lig of the knee will take around 6 weeks to fully settle down and a number or months in strength training to ensure the leg is up to the job of high impact activity.

Hope this helps and good luck on the water.

The hinged supports are good for a season or two then it's time to buy another if you think you still need it ........
