i've recently drilled an extra hole on the np booms to shorten another 2cm and did fit a 178cm boom length required of a 5.5 supernova, i don't want to buy a 130-160 boom just to fit just one sail a nr 4.5 with 159cm boom length..i tried this once on the adjusted 178cm boom, sure it worked..looks funny and odd but what tends to happen to the sail would it eventually help rip apart the boom handles or the sail would jelly up and down with draft moving all over the place
I've seen it written somewhere, "if the boom is too long, tie the clew off to one side of the boom so it can't flap about". Or I guess if there's enough rope, you could tie it off to both sides and keep it central. Just means a bit more weight hanging out the back of the sail, not sure how bad that would be. Give it as try, can't hurt anything.

hmmm..never thought of that, that is tying extra on both sides, well thanks decrep my main worry it just might overburden the boom head and crack it
Yes, I think hanging on to a sail that;s too big for the wind strength, is going to stress every thing more than running a sail that's a bit too small for the boom.
np has this thing with the term "articulated boom head", to me that means a bit of play up and downwards between the clamp and the boom arms..does that make sense to you or is it some marketing term to make it more attractivealso i got myself a used x3 boom so i can sell the other older model to a friend who needed one pronto..problem is the guy picked the wrong size whilst picking in the dark and realized it was a 160-210 boom..so the now is if i have a 7.2 with a boom length of 209 and the usual +/-1cm would this be maxxing out the clew end and give strain to the middle part where the clew slides into the boom..remember there is only i believe 4cm left
