Hey everyone,
a small section of the xply at the head of one of my sails is quite crinkled. i dont thing its greatly affecting the preformance of the sail, but its just one of those things that pisses me off.
has anyone found a good way of flattening it out?
i was thinking about ironing it with a bit of cloth over the top.

not really keen to experiment without some more advice.

Cheers

Assuming this is not a troll............

It will always happen from rolling it and there is no way it can affect performance. I would not go anywhere near it with an IRON!!!!! It is 2 layers of film, with fibres in the middle all glued together...... think about heat and how it may affect that laminate??

I don't know much about windsurf sails but I have used dinghy sails a lot and I wouldn't go near them with any heat.

Ha ha ha, nice one Adam!

Maybe you could try ironing a discrete part first NO DON'T. Ironing your sail sounds about as smart as ironing your face! I think the wrinkles are something you will need to live with...

To prevent this from happening (or from getting as bad), I suggest rolling sails with a little bubble wrap in the head...

I have, and others I know, ironed out ding/stretches in mono film sails, ..... take a great deal of care!! always use a towel over ding and apply iron for a second or two then check repaet until flat.... Note I have only tried this on single monofilm not on cross ply or multilayered panels... regardless of what you may think done with care it does work. tho' am sure it will invalidate any warranty.

Caused by the rolling up of sail? Just have to live with it. I wouldn't go anywhere near x-ply with heat, whilst the film is pretty resiliant the glue could do funny things or it could harden the xply and cause it to crack.

My mum has got an old mangle you could use, no heat required - just good old fashioned hard work...... so your x-ply material and batterns will be totally safe and it will come out looking like new

You can also pour hot water onto the crease - the hot water softens the material just enough to remove the hard-line of the fold. Note that I have only done this with monofilm sails.

the less you muck around with your sail the longer it will last.

e.g. wash and iron your jeans less, they will last longer

(tho they may reek a bit!) phooaaarr!
