I learned something new recently- the contact cement that comes in a tin is actually different to the contact cement in the tube. They keep it locked away behind the caged shelves in Bunnings because it contains the nasty sniffable chemicals that presumably also makes it a more durable adhesive. This certainly corresponds with my experiences with deck pad repair- the tinned glue works better.

Nah, I am sure the kwik grip in the tube is the same. Its probably just the extra surface area of the stuff in the tin that makes it so overpowering.

There is also the water based stuff, and it dries clear and doesn't smell, but in my experience it took weeks to go off unless it was a very thin layer. Not worth the trouble to use it again.
