I think like decrepit said check you've got a mast/sail combo that match, other than that , more downhaul,
you shouldn't cut battens, they're cut to the correct size for the sail they're in already by the sailmaker.
They'll look too long if there's not enough downhaul or rigged on the wrong mast, if they're really not rotating then get someone expert looking to have a look at the beach one day whenn you're rigged, if the mast is the right bend curve they should rotate, even with an sdm.
I should add if you were to cut them, you'll later discover they have to be the length they are now to fit the batten pocket, any shorter than a few mm and they won't even sit in the tension screw
