Keef, are you talking about larger gauge screws (i.e. thicker) or longer screws?

If they are longer you could try running the inserts a little deeper and then packing the top with glass.

If they are thicker then drill out the inserts. I know the standard chinook inserts only take a 8G screw or thereabouts and any I want to use with 'normal' screws have to be drilled out a bit otherwise you can never get the screws in.

How much different are these screws?

hi dale im after fater diameter not longer , i wouldn't drill the chinook to fit these screws they must be a different plug, i know you have changed your straps on a few of your boards, Ive hunted around and can only get the standard plugs,
if these plugs were drilled to take the larger screws I'm sure they would split

Keef, if they are the standard chinook ones you are using, you can drill them easily enough. You might want to use one as a sacrificial test initially.

I have only left the insert's hole as standard diameter when re-doing the whole board and when using two screws per strap. Every other time I drill them to suit the size of the existing screws. (For some reason 4mm or 4.5mm diameter sticks in my head but I can't remember exactly)

One tip is to use the drill running backwards so that it doesn't pull itself through the plastic too fast and drill through the other side.

The other very important tip is to find out how deep they are and wrap electrical tape around your drill bit to make sure you don't go too far out the bottom of the insert. To find out how deep they are just use a 3mm bit and mark it with electrical tape as well.

If you wrap enough tape around the drill it stops it from pulling through too far.
