i am looking for some help to complete a flat water forward loop. after reading some comments from pros in an article online they say that they have never been hurt trying a forward.

I am living proof that there is an exception to that rule. and oh, it hurt bad....

it appears that i have taken the first step outlined in the how to's, "i actually tried to do it."

this is what i did.

i sailed on a broad reach and found a piece of chop, i then jumped the board, moved my sheet hand further back on the boom and sheeted in and pulled it up. i tucked the board up under my bum and looked back over my sheet hand shoulder. the rest is a blur,

apparently i rotated. the nose of the board then got stuck in the bottom, it was very shallow, my mates where siting down in the water where i tried it and i thought they were standing up.

i only got half way round and came to a very sudden stop with my mast pointing in the direction is was travelling. my head soar and my boom broken, (i think due to my head) and the nose of my board bent.

other than,

1.idiot why did you try it
2.what fool attempts a loop in 40cm of water
3.give up looping

can anyone provide tips so i can try it again? (hey, i can still walk)

justin.

Sounds like you rotated about 90deg and speared the nose straight down.

A flat water loop is nothing like a forward really, it is more of a roll..... roll around the mast when it is horizontal. Imagine you are stading on your board sheeted in, up in the air. By magic you can change nothing, but the mast moves downwind 90 deg so the mast is horizonal. You'd be looking at the ground thru the sail window. In that position is where your rotation occurs.

I'd say (guessing without looking at your move) that your mast went too far forwards. For flat water, you need to be very (about 30deg) downwind, and as you initiate the roll, the mast tip travels even more downwind than the nose of the board.

If you can imagine the above you'll nail it.

Hi Mark,

so more like a cheese roll? is the technique i tried the way it should be done in the surf?

so i jump, then lean the sail downwind and look through the window at the water. ten roll around the mast sheeting in with my back hand.

i am thinking this will give me a waterstart landing position?

i will watch some vids and try to get the mind around the problem and then give it another go..... i am struggling a little imagining the move now. every vid i watch seemes to do it slightly differently?

Yeah very much so..... of course when we say it like that it sounds slow etc but it is very fast. You can't sort of "put yourself" in that position and then sheet hard as the sail by then has no wind in it. The hard sheet in and push the front hand downwind is the same time / motion as moving the mast tip well downwind.

You are right with the waterstart possie: watch the vids and you'll see the pro's have their bum hit the water pretty much the same time as the board does as there is not much height to rotate in

thanks a lot Mark,

I think i got it in my head now. I think i didn't push my front hand down wind enough i just pushed it forward. So i didn't spin i just endo'd. will be looking to get the sail in the right position next time.

I watched some vids and as you said, roll around the mast.

when i tried it the first time i had to ask a mate what happened because it was all so fast i had no idea and so didn't know what went wrong. (thanks to my mate who is still laughing and tells me it was a spectacular crash)

Can't wait to give it another go! your help has been invaluable.

Regards Justin.

which reminds me: I forgot to mention .... get somebody to video if u can. Peli Pt is good at you can loop in the boat channel in deep water and your cameraman (or even better camerawoman in bikini) can stand in waist deep water on the bank to get close up.

you'll pick your problem straight up upon watching the tape.
