Hi Seebreezers, I am new to windsurfing. Trying to buy s/hand board. I was given info that I am suitable with 120-140L. What is formula board, slalom, freestyle, freerace. I found some good/cheap formula board here. Is this good for intermediate w/surfer?
Kim, go for the freestyle, this will suit you most. Your size, 120 lt maybe on the large size, you can come down to maybe, 105-110lt max How's it all going, you making good progress?
Depends what you like doing and prob where you sail. Waves you generally sail freestyle and wave boards. Flat water to small chop is great for Slalom blasting. Formula boards are generally for light wind sailing and if you like, racing around a coarse and carry bigger sails although a lot of new wide style Slaloms can carry bigger sails as well. Just remember Formulas are not for everyone. ta Vando
thanks for info. Ok I will stay with freestyle, as mineral have suggested. I am 73KG, I am bit scare of trying low volume(may be not for you)board, because I am still at beginning level, (only start couple of month ago). Do you think 100L will float me? According to calculation: 75+12(board)+10(rigs)=95L.... But I need extra ..Mmmmm...worried
gemaxau, If you are not confident that you can uphaul on a 100l board, then dont get one. Experts can uphaul boards with minimal volume, beginers and intermediates may find it very difficult to uphaul a small volume board when the sea conditions change. When it gets windy it gets a lot lumpier. Err a bit on the side of caution, and decide what you want to do.
Formula boards are 1m wide (typically) and are great in light winds, can be a handful when the wind gets up though. They are good for upwind/downwind work. Slalom boards are very fast in a straight line, and not so good at turning corners (relatively). These are best reaching. Freestyle boards are great for tricks, spins etc. Not the fastest ina straight line, but are capable of turning in their own lenght (with the right technique). Freerace boards are for blasting, turns better then a slalom board, and typically faster then a freestyle board. Wave boards are optimised for waves. Pick what you want to do with your weekends, choose accordingly, and dont get anything too extreme, give yourself enough to work with.
Personally I wouldnt get a 100L board if I couldnt waterstart.
Hi,you are in sydney, get about 120lt freeride board, like tabou rocket, starboard carve both are great boards, easy to ride, gybe and fast to have great fun,you will never look back..enjoy that sail u bought from me.good luck
JB im not saying that gemaxau should get a 100lt,(i agree with you on that) but i think he should get 115-120max, lets not forget that he’s on 73kg. i started on a carve 131 and i have to tell you that i got over that board in 3 mths, the carve 131 was great but after a while you are restricted.
Boards these days are much wider than the older boards such as my screamer 278 103lt therefore are easier to up haul.
