I remember a thread quite a while ago that was about dealing with knee injuries whilst windsurfing... taping vs brace vs shot of concrete etc etc

anyway Im looking for a knee brace to use when windsurfing... I seem to remember someone saying there was a shop near windsurfing perth that made up waterproof knee braces or something of the sort?

if anyone knows where I can get one that would be great.. I probably dont NEED it, but just want to be on the safe side

PS im a student so the cheaper the better (ie im poor )

Stevo, yep the place is in same block of shops as WindsurfingPerth. Cant recall name, but if you call Reg at Windsurfing Perth, he has one and can give you the name of the shop

And yes, better to be safe than sorry. I only use mine when its going to get a bit rough on the water.

Yes the shop is about 4 or 5 up from REG's in the same block and you can get one that will give you sideways support ( mine was for torn medial ligament ) for about $90??? or so.
Mine lasted about 3 seasons before I felt confident to not use it all the time.

Good luck.........

ahhh awesome... yeah i tore medial (the one running down the inner-side of the knee) as well whilst snowboarding last year... lots of bike riding and time in the gym have seen massive improvements, but just want to stay on the safe side...

thanks for that guys

I bought a knee brace from that shop, can't recall the name either, but it's neoprene and has plastic hinges sewn in. $160.00, there are cheaper ones but I wanted as much support as I could after breaking my leg.

Stevo

1... Quaterzone......works a treat.... 1 shots lasted me approx 7 months to date.

2....Stretching of the hamstrings is a must...... helps heaps.

3.... Knee brace will help your mind cope.... but its bulky and generally crap for swimming and will not help that much being wet.

4 ....Keep your knee warm...........BEST thing is a long leg wetsuit, and or pluss a 3mm to 5mm thick dive suit leg ,from thigh to calf.

5 After sailing do stretches and ice it down.

6 Watch the anti inflamitories often they will help settle it down but after drinking water all day and having a beer as the sun sets.....the guts/ stomach lining is non existant and can get burn out and or rev vvvvv yr night.

Stevo,
Knee problems at 17! Sh1t I hope you can learn to sail with crutches before you're 30.

Jokes aside, I had a 100% rupture (tear) of my patella tendon in 2003 playing rugby. They had to wire the patella to my tibia and roughly suture the tendon back together. Anyway to cut a long story I now wear a velcroed neoprene knee support which can be adjusted to suit (I find this much better than a tube type support which stretches out of shape and looses its elasticity). In addition I have to tape it up around the top and bottom as the stresses put on it whilst sailing (waterstarting etc) will release the velcro holds.

KA222,
You must look like Robocop with that thing on - how does it go for w/starting (and for making nice big holes in your board)

Shop name is FOP.

You may need a referral to get a brace.
I have used one of the carbon jobies many years ago after an ACL replacement one of three I've had.
No substitute for Physio and rehab to make it better then gradually working back into your sport.

Ahah Im 21 now... was 20 when I did it...
Family history of dodgy knees... a long and distinguished list of reconstructions aha

As for physio and rehab ive nailed that pretty well with bike riding/exercises and have been solidy back into 1st division hockey for the past few months and about to start getting back in to some heavy weights again in the gym to help get back the 5 kg of muscle i traded for fat when i couldnt run

... feeling pretty solid on the knee, although it makes lots of clicky noises now
Havent managed to get back round to windsurfing again.. its been over a year now...and ive had lots of brand new kit sitting in the garage waiting to be used

Im thinking of just taping it up properly before going out... im pretty ace at strapping and taping now thanks to the physio... and it definately adds a lot of support... its just a bitch to rip off later on
