Hey, was around a mates place today, and we stuck a rig on his old skate board, was kinda tricky... and quite unstable, plus needed a fair amount of wind to go... Anyone had any experience making one of these, maybe with a long skate board. would be cool if it could go on grass, when its really light wind. Plus it has to be cheap. The cheaper the better.

i did the same haydz
got an old skatie and put a rig onto it
very tricky yes
but after persisting i was flogging along
very scary as my street seems to be a wind tunnel and very gusty
i just didnt know how to stop
getting backwinded and smashed on the bitumen is not good
you really need a long board and wide trucks
just buy one
they do go cheap and its the real deal and you can you on grass

I used to do that a lot on big carparks when I was frustrated by the lack of wind..you really don't need much wind..an old 4.5m and very ligth wind is perfect to do lots of tricks, backwind etc...plus if you have good skate skills you could even do some aerial gybe/willy skipper kind of move ( I can't I am a crap skateboarder).
As for fixing a rig onto a skate nothing is much easier, just drill a little hole in the skateboard for the screw thread to go through the board and the square nut to be just behind the front truck. This way when you screw the mast foot the square nut is blocked (from rotating) by the truck . Easy and you only have a little hole in the board!

Fish is right , I saw some cheap longboard skate with big wheel in Kmart/BigW toy area .. would do perfect for grass

Just a thought, wouldnt a dirtsurfer with a sail attached be more "windsurfer" like, and it would go well on grass.

Grass has got to hurt less than bitumen, or at least take off less skin when you inevitably fall off.

I saw Poor Rellie had one for sale pretty cheap.

Hey Filth,

I used to use a skateboard on netball courts.
But you need the super smooth surfaces that are about 8 courts wide.
Much easier than a rough road or carpark.

Super fast with a 4.5. Easier to teach friends. My uncoordinated land loving buddies could join in.

When I went to the UK I didn't sail so I bought one of the offroad skate boards with the numatic tires..... but there was too much rolling resistance so needed lots of forward drive in the legs and uni joint. The grass does not give you much ...ummmm...
fin pressure. You know what I mean.

Stick to the skateboard with super tight trucks and the one handed laydown jybes and moves you can't do on the water will come. Goodluck with the forward though!

I built a long skateboard deck out of fibreglass and put an old rig on it but I found that even standing on the edge of the board I couldn't create enough force to counteract its tendency to bear off. That was using normal size wheels. Need a wider deck.

I met a guy who had a landsurfer which apparently worked perfectly. It was just a plank of wood, about four feet long, and eight inches wide. A wide axle at the back, wheels sticking out at least four inches either side and a single wheel at the front. Wheels basically golf buggy tyres. I think the hardest part of building one would be finding some big trucks which would allow you to create enough turning force.

And (I learnt this the hard way) wear a helmet and knee pads. You will look like a tool but it will be worth it!

use a freebord, they are bigger than normal boards and you can lean with them, giving the effect of kiteing/sailing

I have one where I have welded a half inch pipe across the bottom of the trucks in order to take pneumatic wheels about 8" diameter. Goes awesome on wet sand and grass etc. A longer deck is better so it doesn't speed wobble so bad and is not so tight turning at speed... mine is about 800mm long.

You cant weld the (steel) pipe straight onto the (alloy) trucks but I have a trick to overcome that. Can email photos if you like.
